Augustana used a pair of first half goals to stand up in a 2-0 win over Wayne State Friday afternoon in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Even with the loss, the Wildcats (6-8-4, 6-7-2 NSIC) were able to earn the eighth seed for the NSIC tournament after Upper Iowa beat Winona State 1-0 in overtime, knocking the Warriors out of contention for the final spot. The win puts Wayne State in the NSIC tournament for the first time since 2006, and they will play in a 3 p.m. matchup next Wednesday at Concordia-St. Paul.
In Friday’s regular-season finale, the host Vikings controlled the first half and scored a pair of goals. The two teams played to a stalemate in the second half with both teams recording four shots on goal.
Augustana recorded goals at the 17:23 mark followed by another at the 33:48 mark of the first half to take a 2-0 lead at intermission. The Vikings held an 11-3 edge in shots and 6-2 in shots on goal during the first half.
Neither team scored in the second half with stats on the two teams fairly similar. Wayne State held a 3-1 edge in corner kicks during the half but could not convert into goals. Augustana outshot the Wildcats 12-9 while both teams had four shots on goal.
Wehner led WSC with five shots, all on goal. Abby Sutton added three shots while Megan Phillips made two shots with one on goal. Rachel Grisham faced 23 shots and recorded eight saves while allowing two goals.
