Wayne State opened the 2017 women’s soccer season with a 1-1 deadlock at Augustana in Northern Sun Conference play Thursday at Sioux Falls, S.D.
After battling to a scoreless tie in the first half, the Wildcats drew first blood at the 54:48 mark as junior forward Christina Stasi found the back of the goal from the right side of the box with an assist from Carleigh Wilson.
Augustana tied the score with just over 10 minutes left in regulation as Samantha Tymkowicz scored a goal at the 79:21 mark. Wayne State had a chance to take the lead in the final six minutes when a shot on a free kick from Alexis Strothers hit the crossbar, keeping the score at 1-1 heading into overtime.
The Wildcats held a 2-1 shot edge in the first overtime while Augustana had a 5-0 advantage on shots in the second overtime, but neither team scored as the game ended in a draw.
Augustana finished the contest with a 29-13 edge in shots and 12-4 advantage on corner kicks. Both teams were called for two offsides while Wayne State had one more foul than Augustana 7-6.
Stasi led Wayne State with one goal. Brooke Buzzell, Hannah Knight, Shelby Bullard and Rachel Fraser were also credited with shots on goal for the Wildcats. Sophomore goalkeeper Rachel Grisham made nine saves while allowing just one goal in her first collegiate start in goal.
Wayne State (0-0-1, 0-0-1 NSIC) will host Colorado Christian Sunday at 11 a.m. at the WSC Soccer Pitch, followed by a 2 p.m. Monday afternoon contest at home against Black Hills State.
