Despite being outshot 28-12, the Wayne State women’s soccer team held their own with preseason NSIC favorite Augustana and managed a 1-1 tie in the conference opener for both teams Friday at the WSC Soccer Pitch.
The Vikings scored in the 19th minute to take the early advantage, but Wayne State knotted it up at the 30:24 mark when Hannah Knight’s shot that was trapped on the crossbar by the Augustana goalie was cleaned up by Carys Hund to make it 1-1. Both teams had chances after that, but neither could find the net.
Augustana had a 12-7 advantage in shots on goal and a 10-5 advantage in corner kicks. Kelsey Engstrom had three shots on goal while Hund had two tries at goal, including her game-tying score. Kylie Comba recorded 11 saves in goal for the 3-0-1 Wildcats.
Wayne State goes on the road next weekend for games at University of Mary on Saturday and Minot State on Sunday.
