Wildcat soccer team splits road matchups

The Wayne State soccer team bounced back from a shutout loss at Bemidji State to post a clean sheet against Minnesota Crookston and stay in the thick of the race for a spot in the postseason tournament.

On Sunday, Sophie Ketchmark scored a pair of goals to lead the Wildcats to a 2-0 win at Minnesota Crookston.

Ketchmark got off back-to-back shots with two minutes, with the second one finding the back of the net at the 17:52 mark for a 1-0 Wildcat lead.

The score stayed the same until late in the contest when Ketchmark scored her second goal of the contest with 7:47 to go, giving Wayne State the needed insurance goal to finish off the shutout.

Ketchmark paced the Wayne State offense with five shots and three on goal with two goals. Rylie Wehner and Megan Phillips each notched two shots on goal with Abby Sutton recording the other Wildcat shot on goal. Rachel Grisham had two saves in the contest while recording her sixth shutout of the year.

On Friday, Bemidji State scored just 2:22 into the contest and went on to score three first-half goals to blank the Wildcats, 3-0.

The host Beavers struck early against the Wildcats, scoring the opening goal of the contest at the 2:22 mark from Erin Becker. Becker scored again at the 19:50 mark, and the Beavers finished the half with one more goal at the 43:04 mark to make the score 3-0.

Wayne State had just one shot on goal by Abby Sutton while Carleigh Wilson and Payton Haliburton also recorded shots for the Wildcats. Grisham played 59:25 and was charged with three goals.  Freshman reserve Regan Ott came in for the final 30:35 of the contest and was credited with three saves.

Wayne State (6-5-4, 6-4-2 NSIC) will visit No. 16 Concordia-St. Paul Friday night at 7 p.m. followed by a Sunday home contest in Wayne against No. 21 Minnesota State at 1 p.m. at the WSC Soccer Pitch.
