Wildcat softball drops pair at Fort Hays State

The Wayne State softball team dropped a pair of games in a doubleheader at Fort Hays State on Wednesday, losing 2-1 and 7-0 in action at Hays, Kan.
In the opener, the game was scoreless until Fort Hays strung three hits together to score a run in the fifth before Wayne State tied it in the sixth when Abbie Hix walked and scored on a Rachel Shumaker double to left.
The score stayed tied until the seventh, when a fielding error was followed by a game-winning single to give Fort Hays the win.
Riley Vanderveen took the loss, pitching well in a losing effort with eight hits, four strikeouts and no walks. Shumaker was 2-for-3 and Katelyn Wobken had two hits to highlight a five-hit attack.
In the nightcap, Wayne opened with back-to-back singles from Wobken and Emily Chandler, but didn’t get another hit until a two-out single by Monique Alyea as the Tigers finished off the sweep with the shutout win.
Allisaon Niemeier took the loss for Wayne State, allowing five runs in 2 1/3 innings.
Wayne State, 1-7, plays at Truman State on Wednesday, March 1, in a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
