Wildcat softball splits first tournament games of season, continue Monday

Following a delay in the schedule due to weekend weather, the Wayne State College softball team traveled a state to the south for a six-game, three-day tournament.

From Topeka, Kansas, the Wildcats opened the Washburn Tournament against Northwest Missouri State in the afternoon and closed out Sunday night with Fort Hays State.

WSC opened the tourney with a 4-2 loss against the NWSU Bearcats before holding onto a 9-8 victory over the FHSU Tigers. The Wildcats saw their four-game winning streak snapped and now sit 5-1 on the season.

In the loss against Northwest Missouri State, neither team scored the opening two innings until the Bearcats plated four runs in the bottom of the third.

Following a scoreless fourth, WSC answered with two runs in the top of the fifth thanks to a two-run homerun by freshman Maddie Scobee.

Neither team scored the final inning and a half as Northwest Missouri State held onto the 4-2 victory and outhit WSC, 4-3 while neither team committed an error.

Scobee recorded a two-run home run as freshman Leach Chance singled twice and scored for WSC.

Sophomore Taylor Coleman (70 pitches) suffered the loss in two and two-thirds allowing four earned runs off four hits while striking out three batters and walking four. Senior Samantha Felt (45) worked three and a third innings of no hit/scoreless action striking out two batters and walking one.

During the victory over Fort Hays State, Wayne State College plated three runs in the home half of the first inning. Sophomore Jordyn Rochholz drove in sophomore Jordyn Klein as Chance doubled and scored both Rochholz and redshirt freshman Kennadi Borngrebe.

Following a single run in the top of the second by the Tigers, WSC answered with two runs in the home half to lead 5-1. A Coleman triple allowed Klein to score as Coleman was then driven by sophomore Emilee Marth.

Wayne State College added a single run in the third to go up 6-1 thanks to a double by redshirt senior Mary Krystofiak scoring Chance.

Forth Hays State would cut into the deficit with three runs in the top of the fourth trailing 6-4.

The Wildcats began to pull away with two runs in the bottom of the fifth from Chance and senior Laruen Laudick both scoring on a throw in the field and a single run in the sixth to lead 9-4 where Rochholz scored on a RBI bases loaded walk from Krystofiak.

The Tigers made it interesting in the top of the seventh scoring four runs.

Final favored Wayne State College winning 9-8 and outhitting FHSU, 16-9 while committing two errors compared to zero by the Tigers.

Chance singled twice, doubled twice, drove in two runs and scored twice; Borngrebe singled three times and scored; Coleman singled, tripled, drove in two runs and scored as Krystofiak doubled and drove in two runs. Other multi-hit performances came from Klein with two singles, a RBI and two runs scored as Marth singled twice and drove in a run.

Rochholz singled, drove in a run and scored twice; Scobee singled as Laudick scored.

Borngrebe (68 pitches) picked up the win in three innings of relief allowing four runs (three earned) off four hits while striking out five batters, walking three and hitting one. Senior Grace Lucka (84) started the game working three and two-thirds allowing four runs (three earned) off six hits while striking out six batters and walking two. Felt (three) recorded the final out being a flyout to earn the save.
