The Wayne State softball team won one and lost one on the second day of the three-day 8-State Softball Classic in Bentonville, Ark.
In the opener, Wayne State posted a 2-1 win over Ouachita Baptist, thanks to RBI singles by Melanie Alyea and Abbie Hix in the fourth inning. Katelyn Wobken doubled and scored on Alyea’s hit, while Emily Chandler singled and came home on Hix’s single.
The four hits in the fourth accounted for all but one of Wayne State’s offensive output in the win, as Monique Alyea also had a single. Nataliah Hopkins threw a complete-game win for the Wildcats, allowing one run on five hits with one strikeout and three walks.
In the second game of the day, Wayne State dropped a 9-1, five-inning decision to Arkansas Monticello to fall to 1-3 on the season.
Wayne State scored first in the opening inning as Katelyn Wobken walked, moved to second on Emily Chandler’s single, stole third and scored on a wild pitch. The Blossoms came back with six runs in the second inning, then added two in the fourth and one in the fifth to end the game on the eight-run rule.
Chandler was 2-for-3 to lead a five-hit attack for the Wildcats. Wobken, Alyssa Schropp and Jenna Stewart also had hits. Riley Vanderveen took the loss, giving up six runs in 1 1/2 innings.
