Wildcat softball splits Sunday indoor games, catch fire late in game one

It was back-to-back days in North Dakota for the Wayne State College softball program taking on NSIC competition.

Back at the Minot Dome in Minot, North Dakota due to cold weather, Wayne State College closed out their four-game road trip by taking on University of Mary on Sunday.

The Wildcats began with an 11-1 victory while game two favored University of Mary winning 9-8. With the split, Wayne State College moved to 17-11 (2-2 NSIC) as the Marauders are now 9-20 (2-2 NSIC).

During the opening game, scoring started slow with one run for WSC in the top of the first. Freshman Leah Chance posted a sac-fly scoring sophomore Jordyn Klein.

Following back-to-back scoreless innings, WSC added another run in the top of the fourth. Sophomore Taylor Coleman scored on an error.

University of Mary answered with their lone run of the game a half of an inning later to trail 2-1.

Wayne State College then picked up the scoring pace with three runs over the final three innings.

In the fifth, redshirt freshman Kennadi Borngrebe recorded a sac-fly scoring Klein followed by a two-RBI double from Coleman scoring Chance and sophomore Emilee Marth.

During the sixth, Chance posted a two-RBI base hit scoring both sophomore Payton Kincaid and Klein as Marth doubled in Chance.

From the seventh, sophomore Haylee Weber closed with a three-run homerun scoring redshirt sophomore Taylor Fritz and Kincaid.

Final favored Wayne State College winning 11-1 and outhit UMary, 8-6 while committing zero errors compared to two by the Marauders.

Leah Chance singled twice, drove in three runs and scored twice; Taylor Coleman singled, doubled, drove in two runs and scored; Jordyn Klein tripled and scored three times; Emilee Marth doubled, drove in a run and scored as Haylee Weber recorded a three-run homerun.

Senior Hayley Murphy singled; Kennadi Borngrebe accounted for a RBI; Payton Kincaid scored twice as Taylor Fritz scored.

Borngrebe (pitch count NA) picked up the complete game victory in seven innings allowing an earned run off six hits while striking out eight batters and walking four.

From the second outing, neither team scored in the first inning.

Wayne State College posted a four-run top of the second inning. Sophomore Jordyn Rochholz used a two-RBI double scoring Borngrebe and Coleman; senior Lauren Laudick drove in freshman Maddie Scobee as Klein added a sac-fly scoring Rochholz.

University of Mary answered with two runs the next half of an inning.

In the third, WSC added two more runs to lead 6-2 thanks to a two-RBI single from Coleman scoring Marth and Borngrebe.

The Marauders would scored twice in the home half of the fourth to pull within two runs.

Wayne State College built the lead to 8-4 thanks to two runs in the top of the fifth. Coleman reached safely on a fielders choice scoring Marth as redshirt senior Mary Krystofiak tallied a RBI groundout driving in Kincaid.

University of Mary recorded a five-run fifth inning to regain the lead at 9-8.

Final favored the Marauders winning 9-8 as both teams recorded eight hits. University of Mary committed three errors compared to two errors by WSC.

Emilee Marth singled, doubled and scored twice; Maddie Scobee singled twice and scored as Jordyn Rochholz doubled, drove in two runs and scored.

Taylor Coleman singled, drove in three runs and scored; Kennadi Borngrebe singled and scored twice; Lauren Laudick singled and drove in a run; Jordyn Klein and Mary Krystofiak both accounted for a RBI as Payton Kincaid scored.

Senior Samantha Felt (pitch count NA) suffered the loss in two and a third innings of relief allowing five earned runs off four hits while striking out two batters. Senior Grace Lucka started three and two-thirds allowing four runs (two earned) off four hits while striking out and walking two batters each.

The Wayne State College softball team will next host Minnesota Duluth on Saturday, March 29 and welcome St. Cloud State on Sunday, March 30. First pitch is set for noon each day.
