The Wayne State men’s and women’s team each had two event wins and an NCAA provisional mark to highlight the day at the Wildcat OutDoor Classic over the weekend at the LeRoy Simpson Track in Wayne.
Four NSIC schools — including Minnesota State, Northern State and Sioux Falls — were joined by Div. I South Dakota and NAIA schools Briar Cliff, Dakota State, Dordt, Jamestown, Midland, Mount Marty and Northwestern in the two-day, 12-school invitational.
In men’s action, Preston Davis and Robert Sullivan scored event wins while Dylan Kaup reached an NCAA provisional mark in the hammer throw to lead the Wildvcats.
Davis posted a personal best mark of 176 feet, 11 inches to win the javelin while also posting a sixth-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles in 15.90 seconds. Sullivan recorded a first-place finish with a leap of 22-11 in the long jump and was second in the 110-meter hurdles in 15.41 seconds.
Kaup notched an NCAA provisional mark in the hammer throw, taking second at 184-2. Cade Kalkowski came in fourth (179-10) and Matthew Nemec was sixth at 166-8. Kaup also had an eighth-place finish in the discus with a mark of 144-0.
Second-place finishes were recorded by Jayle Hinkle in the shot put (50-7 1/4), Dylan Kessler in the 5,000-meter run (15:59.98) and Nathan Hiemer in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (11:05.76).
Mikhail Sands came in third place in the long jump (22’-3 3/4) and was ninth in the triple jump (40-8 3/4).
Other top Wildcat finishers were Bailey Peckham placing fourth in the 5,000-meter run (16;10.86), Jack Doughty finishing sixth in the 5,000-meter run (16:41.25), Noah Lilly taking sixth in the pole vault (12-11 1/2), Alvyns Alcenord finished sixth in the 200-meter dash (23.21), Jacob Ladage was sixth in the 400-meter dash (51.97), Brock Hegarty took seventh in the 5,000-meter run (17:02.03), Nathan Pearson was eighth in the 1,500-meter run (4:20.22) and Jakob Kemper placed eighth in the 800-meter run at 2:04.23. The Wildcat 1,600-meter relay team of Davis, Jacob Ladage, Kyle Lowe and Bryce Holcomb came in fourth with a time of 3:33.61.
On the women’s side, Mikayla Marvin and Jordyn Pester each won events to lead the Wayne State College women’s team.
Marvin captured first in the pole vault, clearing 10-11 3/4, while Pester crossed the tape first in the 400-meter dash with a time of 57.56 seconds.
Mckenzie Scheil recorded an NCAA provisional mark in the hammer throw at 174-9 to place second, and also finished seventh in the shot put (43-3 1/4).
Joan Jelimo came in third place in the 400-meter dash (59.41) and was fourth in the 200 (26.44).
Riana Noelle took second in the triple jump (35-3 3/4) and was fourth in the long jump (17-1 1/4) while Kenzie Sullivan posted a second-place finish in the discus (143-2).
Tia Jones notched a fourth in the hammer throw (169-5) and was ninth in the shot put at 40-11.
Other top finishers for the Wildcats included Wayne native Andrea Torres taking fourth in the 10,000-meter run (41:35.48), Hanna Lazure tying for fourth in the high jump (4-11 3/4), Sophie Noecker finishing fifth in the long jump (16-6 1/2), Marin Jetensky placed fifth in the 800-meter run (2:27.78), Kori Siebert was sixth in the 100-meter hurdles (16.78), Morgan Shearer took eighth in the long jump (15-11) and Molli Vasa was ninth in the 400-meter hurdles (1:12.70).
Wayne State will compete again on Friday, March 29 at the Fort Hays State Invitational in Kansas.
