Closing out a three-game road stint, the Wayne State College women’s and men’s basketball team battled the winds on their way up to Sioux Falls, South Dakota for week night league action.
From the Stewart Center, WSC visited the USF Cougars on Thursday.
The Wayne State College women held onto a 72-70 victory while the Wildcat men won 66-61. Head WSC men’s basketball coach Jeff Kaminsky became the all-time wins leader with 122 career wins in his ninth season.
In the women’s game, WSC led 20-17 and also added to their lead with a 16-15 second to go up 36-32 at the break. The Wildcats won the third, 21-20 as Sioux Falls won the fourth, 18-15. Final favored Wayne State College winning 72-70. WSC snapped a two-game losing streak improving to 5-5 (2-4 NSIC) as the Cougars dropped their third straight falling to 6-7 (2-4 NSIC).
Wayne State College leaders were junior Kylah VanDonkersgoed (7-18 FG/1-8 3PT/2-4 FT) with 17 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals; senior Tate Norblade (5-11 FG/0-1 3PT/6-6 FT) followed with 16 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals; senior Delaney Clark (4-6 FG/4-4 3PT/1-2 FT) added 13 points, eight rebounds and three assists as sophomore Brooklyn Kruse (4-6 FG/0-2 3PT/2-2 FT) tallied 10 points, two rebounds and two assists.
Other scoring came from senior Maya Fitzpatrick (five rebounds/four assists/one steal) with eight points, senior Carsyn Boswell (one rebound/one assist/one steal) tacked on seven points as junior Meg Rietz (two rebounds/one block) scored one point.
WSC shot 25-61 (41%) from the field, 8-26 (30.8%) from behind the arc and 14-20 (70%) at the foul line.
Sioux Falls was led by Aby Phipps with 21 points and 10 rebounds; Anna Vaaler added 16 points as Kami Wadsworth tallied 15 points.
The Cougars finished 25-58 (43.1%) from the floor, 4-14 (28.6%) from the three point line and 16-20 (80%) at the charity stripe.
Sioux Falls outrebounded Wayne State College, 36-29 including 10 to 9 offensively which led to 13 second chance points compared to 12 for the Wildcats. WSC scored seven points off of 15 Cougar turnovers while USF scored 16 points off of 13 Wildcat turnovers.
Sioux Falls won the battle in the paint (36-30) and fast break scoring (15-0) as WSC won the bench scoring (23-10).
During the men’s outing, Sioux Falls jumped out to an 8-0 lead and held a 27-23 first half lead. The Wildcat men then started the second half on a 7-0 run and outscored USF, 43-34 in the final 20 minutes. Final favored Wayne State College winning 66-61. WSC snapped a two-game losing streak improving to 8-4 (2-4 NSIC) as Sioux Falls dropped their third straight falling to 6-6 (2-4 NSIC).
Wayne State College leaders were freshman Matt Noll (8-13 FG/0-1 3PT/0-3 FT) with 16 points, eight rebounds, four steals and one assist; junior transfer Kai Smith (4-8 FG/1-3 3PT/4-5 FT) followed with 13 points, three rebounds, three steals and one assist as sophomore JJ Ferrin (4-15 FG/3-10 3PT) added 11 points, three assists and one rebound.
Other scoring came from fifth-year senior Noah Erickson (two rebounds/one assist) with nine points, fifth-year senior Jay Saunders (three rebounds/three assists/three steals/one block) tallied eight points, fifth-year senior Sean Stokes (three rebounds/six assists/one steal) tacked on four points, sophomore Landon Classen (one rebound/one steal) had three points as junior Ryan Blum (four rebounds) finished with two points.
WSC shot 26-60 (43.3%) from the field, 6-22 (27.3%) from behind the arc and 8-14 (57.1%) at the foul line.
Sioux Falls was led by Taylen Ashley with 19 points as Noah Puetz added 11 points.
The Cougars finished 21-54 (38.9%) from the floor, 9-25 (36%) from the three point line and 10-13 (76.9%) at the charity stripe.
Sioux Falls outrebounded Wayne State College, 37 – 25 including eight to four offensively which led to 11 second chance points compared to six for the Wildcats. WSC scored 18 points off of 21 Cougar turnovers while USF scored 11 points off of 10 Wildcat turnovers.
WSC won the battle in the paint (36-22) and fast break scoring (17-7) as USF won bench scoring (22-18).
