Wildcat women win back-to-back, wsc men fall ahead of holiday break

With a seven-day moratorium to begin Monday, the Wayne State College women’s and men’s basketball teams closed out their pre-holiday schedule over the weekend.

Back at Rice Auditorium for the first time since Dec. 7, WSC entertained Augustana University on Saturday.

The Wayne State College women won 62-55 while the WSC men suffered a 65-59 loss.

In the women’s game, Augustana led 17-16 after the first quarter followed by the Wildcats taking advantage with a 13-7 second to go up 29-24. WSC added to their lead thanks to a 21-15 third as Augie won the fourth, 16-12. Final favored Wayne State College winning 62-55 to secure back-to-back victories improving to 6-5 (3-4 NSIC) as the Vikings fell to 1-11 (0-7 NSIC).

Wayne State College leaders were senior Maya Fitzpatrick (6-15 FG/1-7 3PT/1-2 FT) recorded 14 points, four rebounds, seven assists and one block; junior Kylah VanDonkersgoed (6-11 FG/1-3 3PT/1-2 FT) added 14 points, five rebounds, one assist, one steal and one block; senior Carsyn Boswell (4-8 FG/4-7 3PT) followed with 12 points, two rebounds and one block as senior Tate Norblade posted a team-high 12 rebounds with eight points, two assists and three steals.

Other scoring came from sophomore Brooklyn Kruse (three rebounds/one assist/one steal) and junior Rachel Dahlen (five rebounds/one assist) both scored four points as junior Meg Rietz (six rebounds/four assists/two steals) and senior Delaney Clark (four rebounds/one assist/one steal) each finished with three points.

WSC shot  23-65 (35.4%) from the field, 8-31 (25.8%) from behind the arc and 8-12 (66.7%) at the foul line.

Augustana was led by Olivia Hayenga with 15 points as Isabella Sanneh followed with 12 points.

The Vikings finished 21-65 (32.3%) from the floor, 6-17 (35.3%) from the three point line and 7-10 (70%) at the charity stripe.

Wayne State College outrebounded Augustana, 51 – 36 including 15 to 9 offensively which led to 14 second chance points compared to eight for Augie. WSC scored nine points off of 12 Viking turnovers while Augie scored nine points off of 16 Wildcat turnovers.

Augustana won the battle in the paint (26-24), fast break scoring (11-3) and bench scoring (20-11)

During the men’s game, Augustana led 32-26 at the break and built at-most a 10-point lead early in the second half. The Vikings only subbed once in the second half due to a player fouling at as all five starters played 35:55+ including one all game. Both teams scored 33 second half points as the final favored Augustana winning 65-59 to improve to 5-8 (2-5 NSIC) as the Wildcats fell to 8-5 (2-5 NSIC).

Wayne State College leaders were freshman Matt Noll (8-16 FG/1-5 3PT/4-4 FT) recorded 21 points, eight rebounds, two assists, one steal and three blocks as sophomore JJ Ferrin (4-8 FG/3-6 3PT/2-2 FT) followed with 13 points, three rebounds, one assist and one steal.

Other scoring came from fifth-year senior Jay Saunders (two rebounds/five assists/two steals/one block) tacked on seven points; fifth-year senior Noah Erickson (four rebounds/one assist/one steal/one block) with six points; five-point scoring came from fifth-year senior Sean Stokes (one rebound) and junior transfer Kai Smith (two rounds) as sophomore Landon Classen (two rebounds/one assist/one steal/one block) tallied two points.

WSC shot 21-59 (35.6%) from the field, 7-30 (23.3%) from behind the arc and 10-11 (90.9%) at the foul line.

Augustana was led by Tanner Te Slaa with 21 points and 14 rebounds in 40 minutes of work; Tameron Ferguson followed with 16 points as Akoi Akoi fouled out with 12 points.

The Vikings finished 22-53 (41.5%) from the floor, 6-19 (31.6%) from the three point line and 15-23 (65.2%) at the charity stripe.

Augustana outrebounded Wayne State College, 45 – 29 including 10 to 4 offensively which led to 11 second chance points compared to four for the Wildcats. WSC scored 13 points off of 14 Viking turnovers while Augie scored seven points off of seven Wildcat turnovers.

Augustana won the battle in the paint (32-28) while WSC won the fast break scoring (14-11) and bench scoring (7-2).

A mandatory seven-day moratorium for Division II teams will last from Monday, Dec. 23 – Sunday, Dec. 29 will take place over the holiday break. WSC resumes NSIC play at Bemidji State and St. Cloud State on Friday, Jan. 3 – Saturday, Jan. 4.
