Wildcats complete sweep thanks to nine extra base hits, Carson Obrecht with no-hitter into sixth

Ahead of a mid-week home doubleheader, the Wayne State College baseball team closed out their fifth straight road game.

Back at Joe Faber Field in St. Cloud, Minnesota, the Wildcats played what was scheduled to be a single nine inning contest against the host Huskies.

Wayne State College scored at least two runs in each of the opening five innings to win by run rule with a 16-3 victory. WSC swept the series improving to 23-16 (19-11 NSIC) while St. Cloud State fell to 20-20 (16-14 NSIC).

The Wildcats started with three runs in the top of the first inning. Senior Kaden Young reached safely on an error scoring senior Taylor Gill, sophomore Max Heard and sophomore Brayden Chaney.

Wayne State College added five more runs in the second. Chaney tallied a RBI base hit driving in senior Keagan McLaughlin, Heard followed with a RBI groundout allowing senior Chase Douglas to score; Gill then drove in Chaney; senior Quinn McCafferty doubled in Gill as Young doubled in McCafferty.

WSC then plated back-to-back three-run innings to go up 14-0.

In the third, Heard recorded a two-RBI double scoring both McLaughlin and junior Braden Cannon as Gill added a RBI base hit driving in Heard.

During the fourth, McLaughlin had a sac-fly RBI scoring junior Nate Cunningham; Douglas picked up a RBI groundout driving in Cannon as McCafferty ended the scoring with a RBI bases loaded walk allowing Chaney to score.

The Wildcats closed scoring with two more runs in the top of the fifth. Cunningham posted a solo homerun as Chaney doubled in Cannon.

St. Cloud State scored all three of their runs in the home half of the sixth.

Final in seven innings favored Wayne State College winning 16-3 while outhitting the Huskies, 16-1. WSC didn’t commit an error as SCSU recorded one error.

Brayden Chaney singled, doubled three times, drove in two runs and scored three times; Braden Cannon doubled twice and scored three times; Max Heard singled, doubled, drove in three runs and scored twice; Quinn McCafferty doubled, drove in two runs and scored as Nate Cunningham recorded a solo homerun and scored twice. Kaden Young also doubled and drove in a run as Taylor Gill singled three times, drove in two runs and scored twice.

Keagan McLaughlin singled, drove in a run and scored twice; senior Tyler Obrecht singled as Chase Douglas accounted for a RBI and run scored.

Freshman Carson Obrecht (73 pitches) picked up the win in six innings allowing three earned runs off one hit (homerun in sixth) while striking out five batters, walking three and hitting one. Senior Eli Crnkovich (seven) worked the final inning striking out one batter and forcing two flyouts.
