Wildcats continue to perform well among SDSU classic

With one final tune-up meet ahead of the NSIC Indoor Championships approaching, the Wayne State College women's and men's indoor-track & field team continued to showcase top marks and times.

From the Sanford Jackrabbit Athletic Complex in Brookings, SD the SDSU Classic attracted nearly 30 schools and 1,200 athletes from NCAA Division I, II and III along with NAIA and junior college levels last Friday and Saturday.

The Wayne State College women were led by Callie Kirchner with a runner-up finish in the 1,000-meter run at 3:06.04 while teammate Jozlyn Barnes came in eighth at 3:18.42.

In the weight throw, Reilly Young collected a fourth-place finish at 52’ 7 ¼” while McKenna Markle placed sixth at 47’ 6 1/2”.

Other top finishers for the Wildcats were Kaylea Bruxvoort taking fifth in the 300-meter dash in 42.87 seconds and Anna Coffee placed sixth in the high jump clearing 5’ 2 ¼”.

Two more school records were set by the Wayne State College men.

Emmanuel Badejo broke his own school record in the 400-meter dash taking second in 47.72 seconds, an NCAA provisional mark. It bettered the Saturday, Feb. 8 mark of 47.85 set at the Wildcat Classic in Wayne.

The other school record came from the 4 x 400-meter relay team of Alex Leuenberger, Wyatt Nissen, Mitchell Hupp and Badejo who finished sixth with a time of 3:18.24, topping the previous school mark of 3:21.04 set in 2010 by Michael King, Drew Molacek, Aaron Garza and Andy Jansen.

Daylin Mallory had a strong third place finish in the shot put at 51’ 8 ¼” while Alex Razee took fourth in the 300-meter dash in 35.61 seconds.

Other top finishers were Daniel Elge fifth in the weight throw (56’ 10 ¾”), Elliott Nottlemann sixth in the long jump (21’ 6”) and Wyatt Nissen sixth in the 200-meter dash in 22.50 seconds.

The Wayne State College women's and men's indoor track & field team will return to Brookings this Friday competing in the South Dakota State Last Chance Invite.
