Sophomore forward Megan Phillips scored a first-half goal to help Wayne State College gain a 1-1 tie in Northern Sun Conference women’s soccer played Friday afternoon in St. Cloud, Minn.
The Wildcats struck first in the 34th minute when Phillips blasted a shot past goalkeeper Zoe Welsh for a 1-0 Wildcat lead. Wayne State ended the first half with one less shot than the host Huskies 5-4.
The Wildcats maintained their lead until the final nine minutes when St. Cloud State tied the score on a goal by Nicole Friis with an assist from Mia Giorgi. Neither team scored in the two overtime periods to end the contest in a draw.
Phillips paced Wayne State with three shots, all on goal, including her first goal of the season. Brooke Worrel also registered a shot on goal for the Wildcats. Goalkeeper Rachel Grisham was credited with five saves while allowing one goal in the contest.
The Wildcats (2-3-3, 2-2-1 NSIC) will close out their NSIC road trip Sunday with a 12 p.m. contest at Minnesota Duluth.
