Wildcats finish season with sweep of Golden Bears

The Wayne State softball team closed out the regular season in fine fashion on Seniors Day Sunday, sweeping Concordia-St. Paul 8-0 and 14-2 in action at the Chapman Complex.
Cassy Miller threw a one-hit shutout in the opener and Lexie Loos became the school's all-time leader in runs scored as she scored two to run her career total up to 156, two more than the previous mark of 154 set by Amy Sandstrom from 2007-2010.
Miller was masterful i nthe opener, striking out seven and walking two in five innings of work to get her fourth shutout of the year.
Sam O'Brien highlighted a four-run first inning with a two-run homer. Melanie Alyea also had an RBI single in the big inning, and Abbie Hix had a two-run singe in the second inning. Emily Chandler and Katelyn Wobken also had RBI singles in the shutout win, and Wobken went 3-for-3 to lead a 12-hit effort, with Loos, Alyea and Alyssa Schropp each adding two hits.
In the nightcap, Wayne State rang up the Golden Bears for 11 runs on 11 hits in the opening stanza and cruised to the easy five-inning win. Chandler had a two-run homer, Hix had a two-run double and Caitlin Fehringer added a two-run single as Wayne State sent 16 batters to the plate in the first frame.
Wobken added a three-run blast in the second inning, and that was more than enough as the three senior pitchers – Miller, Shelby Wobken and Sarah Macias – saw action in the win.
Wayne State had 13 hits in the second game, led by Hix's three-hit effort. Chandler, O'Brien and Alyea each added two hits.
Wayne State ends the regular season 27-24 overall and 21-9 in NSIC play. The official pairings for the Northern Sun Conference tournament will be announced on Monday, with the tournament starting Thursday in Sioux Falls, S.D.
