After dropping its first three games by one run each, the Wayne State College softball team picked up a 6-2 win Monday evening over Findlay (Ohio) at the National Training Center Spring Games in Clermont, Fla.
Junior catcher Katelyn Wobken had a triple and 3 RBI to lead Wayne State at the plate, followed by sophomore outfielder Emily Chandler with two hits. Sophomore Abbie Hix added an RBI double in support of winning pitcher Nataliah Hopkins, who pitched a complete-game win.
In their first game Monday, Wayne State saw Rockhurst rally for three runs in the bottom of the seventh to post a 4-3 win over the Wildcats.
Wobken hit a leadoff homer in the top of the first to get Wayne State on the board. Rockhurst tied the game in the bottom of the third, but Wayne State put up two runs in the sixth on a two-run double by Monique Alyea, scoring Hix and Sarah Hunter, who was on as a pinch-runner for Melanie Alyea.
Rockhurst put together four straight hits in the bottom of the seventh, helping them score three runs to come away with the win.
Monique Alyea had two of Wayne State’s five hits in the loss, including a double. Wobken, Alyssa Schropp and Melanie Alyea also had hits. Nataliah Hopkins was the hard-luck loser, allowing four runs on 11 hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
Wayne State, 2-12, is off Tuesday and resumes play Wednesday with games against Wilmington (Del.) at 8 a.m. and Southern Indiana at 10:30 a.m.
