Wildcats get walk-off win to sweep Mary

Jake Lemar’s walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning capped a wild final two innings as the Wayne State baseball team extended their win streak to seven straight games with a 5-2 and 7-6 sweep over the University of Mary Wednesday at the Chapman Complex. in Wayne.

Mary took an early lead in the second inning of the opener before Wayne State responded with a solo homer by Andrew Hanson, his third of the season, to tie the game at 1-1.

In the third, Bryce Bisenius broke the 1-1 tie with a three-run bomb to right field, and the WIldcats extended the lead in the fifth with a Brendan Madsen sacrifice fly, scoring Peyton Barnes.

That was enough for winning pitcher Ryan Obrecht, who allowed two runs on four hits in five innings of work. Charles Hasty got the save in relief. Barnes and Brendan Madsen each had two hits to lead the Wildcat offense.

In the nightcap, Travis Miller hit a pair of home runs early in the game, launching a solo shot in the second and adding a two-run blast in the third to give Wayne State a 3-0 advantage.

The Marauders came back with two runs in the fourth and tied the game an inning later, but Wayne State responded with two in the bottom of the inning, thanks to an RBI double by Barnes and a sacrifice fly by Kyle Thompson to make it 5-3.

Mary came back to tie the game on a two-run homer in the eighth, but Alex Logelin came back with a homer in the bottom of the eighth as Wayne State regained the lead at 6-5.

Mary scored again in the top of the ninth, but Bisenius was hit by a pitch and advanced to third on two wild pitches, forcing Mary to intentionally walk the bases full. With one out, Jake Lamar slapped a shot in the gap to bring Bisenius home and give Wayne State its second walk-off win in the last three game.

Hasty got the win in relief, and Miller led the offense with three hits and three RBI.

The Wildcats (16-7, 7-3) are scheduled to play a three-game NSIC road series at Northern State Saturday and Sunday, with a location and times to be announced.
