Wildcats open home NSIC action with home split, Borngrebe with shutout victory in game one while Murphy goes yard

After moving home weekend competition up one day due to predicted weekend weather, the Wayne State College softball team got their first taste of home action after playing their first 28 games out on the road.

From the Pete Chapman Softball Complex, WSC welcomed Minnesota Duluth on Friday.

With two on and two-outs in the top of the seventh, the host Wildcats shut the door late holding onto a 2-0 victory in game one before suffering a 5-2 loss in game two.

In the first outing, neither team scored in the opening inning until Wayne State College took the early 1-0 lead in the home half of the second. Redshirt senior Mary Krystofiak drove in sophomore Lillie Timm.

Following a scoreless third, senior Hayley Murphy hit the top of the center field fence as the ball carried over the fence with a solo homerun for the Wildcats.

Final favored Wayne State College winning 2-0 and outhit Minnesota Duluth, 5-4. Both teams committed one error.

Hayley Murphy recorded a solo homerun, Mary Krystofiak singled and drove in a run as Lillie Timm doubled and scored.

Sophomore Emilee Marth and freshman Maddie Scobee both singled.

Redshirt freshman Kennadi Borngrebe (103 pitches) picked up the complete game shutout victory in seven innings allowing four hits while striking out seven batters and walking two.

During the second game, Minnesota Duluth took early charge with two runs in the top of the first.

Wayne State College answered with two of their own runs in the home half of the second inning. Senior Lauren Laudick drove in Borngrebe as sophomore Jordyn Rochholz added a RBI base hit driving in Murphy.

UMD regained the lead with a single run in the top of the third.

Following back-to-back scoreless innings, the visiting Bulldogs posted single runs in the top of the sixth and seventh.

Final favored Minnesota Duluth winning 5-2 while outhitting Wayne State College, 5-4. WSC committed two errors compared to zero by UMD.

Lauren Laudick and Jordyn Rochholz both singled and drove in a run. Kennadi Borngrebe and Hayley Murphy both singled and scored.

Senior Samantha Felt (68 pitches) suffered the loss in three innings allowing three runs (one earned) off two hits while striking out three batters, walking five and hitting one. Sophomore Taylor Coleman (55) worked four innings allowing two runs (one earned) off three hits while striking out five batters and walking one.
