Wildcats post 5-0 shutout for coach’s first win

Four different players scored for Wayne State as the Wildcats recorded a 5-0 shutout of Black Hills State Monday afternoon at the WSC Soccer Pitch, giving coach Joe Cleary his first win as head coach.

Wayne State scored quickly, as Hannah Knight got her first goal as a Wildcat in the ninth minute of the game off an assist from Christina Stasi. Knight scored again at the 39:01 mark of the game off a pass from Bryana Garcia.

The Wildcats would build a 3-0 halftime advantage late in the first half, as Megan Schuster scored off a free kick from Alexis Strothers.

In the second half, Madison Burgard scored from close range at the 54:45 mark, and Shelby Bullard closed out the scoring in the closing minutes on a shot from 25 yards out to give Wayne State the easy win.

Wayne State outshot the Yellow Jackets 24-4 and were 11-0 in shots on goal. Wayne State had eight corner kicks to the Yellow Jackets’ zero. Goalkeepers Rachel Girsham and Sydney Rogers combined for the Wildcats’ first clean sheet of the season.

Wayne State (1-1-1) will conclude its non-conference schedule Friday afternoon with a 3 p.m. contest at St. Ambrose University.
