Wildcats put on a show for home crowd

Two backs surpassed 100+ yards and it was a sack party for the Wayne State College defense who hosted University of Mary on September 6 during Family Weekend.

From Bob Cunningham Field, WSC jumped ahead with an early four-score lead before winning 42-7.

The Wildcats are now 1-1 and start NSIC play at 1-0 as the Marauders fell to 1-1 (0-1 NSIC).

It was the air attack that set the tone for WSC as quarterback Bennett Dannenbring found wide out Keaton Bonderson on an 18-yard pass late in the first quarter followed by running back Dawson Forgy crossing the goal line (nine-yards) on his first of two scores.

Dannenbring added a 13-yard pop pass to Johnathan Humpal early in the second quarter before first half scoring closed with a Dannenbring 18-yard pass to tight tend Dane Petersen (third TD in two games). Petersen hauled in a team-high four catches for 34 yards.

Dannenbring finished 11-24 for 106 yards with three touchdowns to go along with two rushes for nine yards.

Fourth quarter Wildcat scoring came from Forgy (27 carries for 172 yards and two scores) who ran in a one-yard score early in the quarter while Jack Shuker recorded a 78-yard pick six late in the game.

Brennan Hayes added 119 yards on seven carries including a 93-yard rush.

For a second straight week, Jes Krcil (10 tackles/six solo) and Alex Kowalczyk (seven tackles/four solo) led the Wildcat defense. Krcil added a half tackle for loss and AK finished with two and a half tackles for loss, a sack and interception.

Myles Dais totaled four tackles (two solo), two and a half tackles for loss, two sacks and a forced fumble. WSC finished with seven sacks.

Kaden Sutton produced his second straight fumble recovery.

WSC accumulated 440 total yards (314 rushing) and held UMary to 88 yards rushing. The Wildcats were also 6-6 in red zone scores and chances.

Wayne State College is set for their first road trip of the season to Aberdeen, South Dakota on Saturday, September 13 at 6 p.m. WSC will visit Northern State University.
