Wildcats remain #15 in coaches poll entering NSIC tournament

After showing their dominance on the road this past weekend, the Wayne State College volleyball team remained the same in the most recent national rankings.

According to a release from Wayne State Athletics, the Wildcats collected 544 points in voting conducted by various Division II coaches during the NCAA DII/TARAFLEX Top 25 Coaches Poll. WSC remains #15.

The Wildcats improved to 22-6 overall and ended the NSIC regular season tied for third at 14-4 with Southwest Minnesota State. WSC won the tie breaker with strength of schedule over SMSU.

Wayne State College swept the season series with University of Mary and Minot State this past weekend (also winning 3-0 in Wayne on September 27 – 28).

Ferris State (28-0) remained the top team in the nation collecting 40 first place votes. #2 St. Cloud State from the NSIC (24-2) stayed the same with four first place votes, #3 Nebraska-Kearney (28-1) moved up a spot with one first place vote as #6 Cal Poly Pomona (23-2) fell three spots and were still listed with two first place votes.

Other NSIC teams joining #15 WSC and #2 St. Cloud State among the top 25 include #8 Concordia-St. Paul (21-5) remained the same, #12 Southwest Minnesota State (23-4) moved up four spots and #18 Northern State (20-6) remained the same. Minnesota Duluth (seven) was receiving votes and listed on two or more ballots.

#15 Wayne State College has earned the #3 seed during the NSIC Volleyball Tournament set to begin on Tuesday, November 19. WSC will host #6 seed Winona State University (18-11/11-7 NSIC) at 6 p.m.

Earlier this season, WSC won in four sets (25-21, 26-24, 18-25, 29-27) at Winona State on October 8.

The WSC/WSU winner will face winner of either #2 Concordia-St. Paul (21-5/16-2 NSIC) or #7 Minnesota State-Mankato (18-8/10-8 NSIC).

The other half of the bracket will showcase #1 St. Cloud State (24-2/18-0 NSIC) vs. #8 Sioux Falls (15-11/10-8 NSIC) along with #4 Southwest Minnesota State (23-4/14-4 NSIC) vs. #5 Northern State (20-6/12-6 NSIC).

The NSIC Semifinal and finals will then be hosted by the highest remaining seed. Dates are currently TBA with matches being played either Friday and Saturday, Nov. 22 – 23 or Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 23 – 24.
