Wildcats shine during home classic, eight event wins

After moving the 17th annual Wildcat Classic up one day due to weekend weather, the Wayne State College women’s and men’s outdoor track & field season is underway.

From LeRoy Simpson Track/Cunningham Field on the campus of Wayne State College, teams joining WSC included Minnesota State-Mankato and Sioux Falls from the NSIC along with NAIA schools Briar Cliff, Dakota State, Dakota Wesleyan, Dordt, Morningside and Northwestern as well as Southeast Community College.

The Wayne State College women showcased event wins by freshman Reagan Murphy in the 100-meter hurdles in 14.94 seconds and by freshman Kaitlyn Bloomenrader in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:30.24.  Murphy also had a second-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles at 1:07.21 seconds.

  Senior thrower Reilly Young also scored a first-place finish winning the discus at 160’ 4” while placing fourth in the hammer throw at 168’ 2”.

Second place finishes came from junior Lindsey Kneifl in the triple jump (36’ 2”) and sophomore Kailee Kellum in the long jump at 18’ 2 ½”.

Freshman Zoey Holmes had a third-place finish in the 400-meter dash at 1:00.30 and senior Hailey Baker was third in the hammer throw at 169’ 1”.

Wayne sophomore Brooklyn Kruse was fourth in the shot put (42’ 3 1/2”) and took eighth in the discus at 142’ 7”.

Freshman Alyssa Folds was fifth in the 100-meter dash (12.70), Kneifl was fifth in the long jump with a leap of 17’ 8”, Kellum took sixth in the triple jump (34’ 0”) and junior Olivia Schwarzrock came in seventh in the hammer throw at 163’ 4”.

In the 1,500-meter run, sophomore Callie Kirchner ended sixth at 5:16.06, freshman Allie Czapla was seventh (5:16.76) and junior Sydney Escritt eighth in a time of 5:17.76.

Freshman Jaryn Warecjka was sixth in the 100-meter hurdles (15.82) with freshman Olivia Williams eighth (16.41).

In the men’s division, freshman Emmanuel Badejo set two new school records while sophomore Elliott Nottlemann won two events for the Wayne State men

Nottlemann collected two event wins in the long jump (22’ 10 ¾”) and cleared 6’ 4” to win the high jump while Badejo took first in the 200-meter dash in a new school record time of 20.99 seconds and was second in the 100-meter dash with a new wind-aided school record time of 10.36 seconds.  The previous school records were held by Clay Kramper with times of 10.55 in the 100-meter dash and 21.31 seconds in the 200-meter dash and set in the 2018 season.

Other event wins for WSC came from senior Quentin Dreyer in the 1,500-meter run at 4:09.64 and freshman Alex Razee in the 400-meter dash in 50.39 seconds.

Freshman sprinter Mitchell Hupp (Stanton) came in second in the 200-meter dash in 21.11 seconds and was third in the 100 at 10.48 seconds.  Boone Central senior Wyatt Nissen had a third-place effort in the 200-meter dash (21.35) and was seventh in the 100-meter dash at 10.64 seconds.

Other second place finishes came from junior Daylin Mallory in the shot put (51’ 0”) and senior Daniel Elge in the hammer throw at 186’ 8”.  Elge was also seventh in the shot put (48’ 5 ¼”).

In the 400-meter dash, freshman Mujeeb Adewuyi took third (51.30) with junior Austin Madsen fourth (51.76).

Junior Brody Lucas was sixth in the 800-meter run in a time of 2:02.86 with Dreyer seventh at 2:05.27.

Senior Brandon Mitzel had a fifth-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at 11:09.74.

Senior Alex Brandt captured fourth place in the high jump clearing 6’ 0” while freshman Nate Decker was sixth in the long jump with a top mark of 20’ 9 ¼”.

In the hammer throw, freshman Samuel Zazueta was fourth (176’ 8”) and sophomore Jaxson Ninete fifth at 174’ 3” while freshman Braden McGill was eighth in the discus at 142’ 0”.

The Wayne State College women’s and men’s outdoor track & field season continues during the Concordia Invite in Seward on Friday and Saturday, April 4 – 5.
