Alex Logelin’s three-run homer in the seventh helped Wayne State steal the first game over Bemidji State Sunday in a 9-8 win before the Beavers bounced back to take the nightcap, 15-5, in Bemidji, Minn.
Logelin highlighted a three-run first inning in the opener with an RBI triple, and Andrew Hanson added a two-run single to get the Wildcats out to the early lead.
Bemidji State scored seven unanswered runs to take a 7-3 lead, but Hanson hit the first of two home runs on the day in the fifth, as the three-run blast pulled the Wildcats within a run at 7-6.
Bemidji State got a run in the sixth, but the Wildcats came back in the top of the seventh. Bryce Bisenius and Travis Miller both singled, setting up Logelin’s heroics with a one-out blast over the left field wall to give Wayne State the win.
Hanson was 3-for-4 with five RBI’s and needed only a double to complete the cycle. Logelin homered, tripled and drove in four runs. Bisenius went 4-for-4 in the win while Miler had two hits and scored twice.
Isaac Rubendall got the win in relief of starter Hunter Wienhoff, while Lawson Zenner picked up the save with a scoreless seventh inning.
The ball was leaving the ballpark early and often in the nightcap as the Beavers hit four home runs off Wildcat pitching and launched 15 hits in the 10-run win.
Hanson, who went 6-for-8 on the day, hit a two-run homer in the second to help stake the Wildcats to a 3-0 lead, with Colin Chick adding an RBI single.
Bemidji State got two in the bottom of the second and took the lead for good with six in the third inning, adding runs to finish off the win in seven innings.
Wayne State had 11 hits, but left 10 runners on base in the loss. Hanson was 3-for-4 with a homer and three RBI’s, Logelin also went 3-for-4 and Miller added two hits. Charles Hasty took the loss, allowing eight runs in 2 2/3 innings of work.
The Wildcats (13-19, 11-11 NSIC) face Bemidji State again on Monday in a 12 p.m. NSIC doubleheader.
