The Wayne State baseball team came away with a split against Upper Iowa Tuesday in a doubleheader moved to Millard North High School in Omaha due to bad weather in Fayette, Iowa.
In the opener, freshman Aaron Ras fired 5 2/3 innings of no-hit ball to lead the Wildcats in a 4-2 win.
Ras took a no-hitter into the sixth and gave up two unearned runs, thanks to an error and the Peacocks’ only hit of the game, before Wayne State rallied with two runs in the top of the seventh to get the win.
Wayne State scored single runs in the first and sixth innings. Peyton Barnes scored on a Bryce Bisenius single in the first, while David Janes came home on a sacrifice fly by Garrett Graveline in the sixth to make it 2-0.
After Upper Iowa tied the game, Wayne State came back with a two-out rally in the seventh, thanks to an RBI double by Travis MIller and a single by Janes that brought Miller home. Lawson Zenner came on in relief to close out the win for the Wildcats.
Wayne Sate had 10 hits in the game, with Miller and Jackson Peterson each going 2-for-4 to lead the way. Ras sruck out three and walked three to pick up the win.
In the second game, Upper Iowa took advantage of three Wildcat errors to score four unearned runs and salvage the split with a 6-3 win.
Upper Iowa led early before Wayne State scored in the third when Petersen scored on a Jake Lorenzini single to make it a 2-1 game.
Upper Iowa used three unearned runs in the fourth to make it a 5-1 game before Wayne State scored two in the sixth, thanks to an RBI triple by Simons and a sacrifice fly by Bisenius. Upper Iowa added another unearned run in the sixth to close out the win.
Lorenzini was 2-for-2 with an RBI to lead Wayne State’s six-hit attack. Aidan Breedlove took the loss, allowing two runs in three innings of work.
The Wildcats (12-18, 10-10 NSIC) are scheduled to visit Bemidji State this weekend for a four-game NSIC series, with doubleheaders set for Saturday and Sunday at 12 p.m. each day.
