A mid-week non-conference women’s basketball outing showcased the NSIC at the MIAA.
From Slaymaker Court inside White Auditorium in Emporia, Kansas, Wayne State College visited Emporia State University on Wednesday.
Emporia State University survived the six ties and six lead changes during an 87-82 victory. The Hornets are now 2-1 as WSC fell to 1-1.
Emporia State held the early 25-22 first quarter lead followed by a 25-24 second quarter to lead 50-46 at the break. The host Hornets extended their lead in the third quarter, 20-18 while WSC won the fourth, 18-17. Final favored Emporia State winning 87-82.
Wayne State College had five finish in double figures led by Maya Fitzpatrick (5-11 FG/3-6 3PT/2-2 FT) with 15 points, six rebounds, three assists and one block; Kylah VanDonkersgoed (6-14 FG/2-5 3PT/1-3 FT) added 15 points, four rebounds, three assists, one block and one steal; Delaney Clark (5-8 FG/4-6 3PT) followed with 14 points, four rebounds and one assist; Tate Norblade (1-4 FG/10-12 FT) tallied 12 points, two rebounds and two assists as Carsyn Boswell (4-9 FG/3-5 3PT) tacked on 11 points, three rebounds, five assists and one steal.
Other scoring came from Meg Rietz (eight rebounds/one assist/two blocks) with five points; Macy Birkholz (one rebound) tacked on four points; Brooklyn Kruse (two rebounds/one assist) totaled three points; Rachel Dahlen (one block) had two points as Abby Kopecky (one rebound/one assist) finished with a point.
The Wildcats shot 26-59 (44.1%) from the field, 13-25 (52%) from the three-point line and 17-22 (77.3%) at the foul line.
Emporia State outrebounded Wayne State College, 38-33 (12-7 offensive) which led to nine second chance points compared to four second chance points for WSC. Wayne State College scored eight points off of nine Hornet turnovers while Emporia State had 15 points off of 14 Wildcat turnovers.
Emporia State won the battle in the paint (36-22), fast break scoring (21-15) and bench points (25-24).
