Wildcats sweep Moorhead in softball action

Pitching and offense helped Wayne State sweep a softball doubleheader from MSU Moorhead on Sunday at the Chapman Complex, with the Wildcats winning 1-0 and 7-1.
In the opener, Cassy Miller dominated the Dragons in a three-hit shutout, striking out 12 and walking one in seven innings of work.
The Wildcats got Miller all that she’d need in the fifth inning when Caitlin Fehringer doubled and later scored on a bases-loaded walk to Melanie Alyea.
Fehringer had two of Wayne State’s five hits in the win, while Alyea, Emily Chandler and Abbie Hix added hits.
In the nightcap, Wayne State broke a 1-1 tie with a six-run outburst in the sixth inning, getting seven hits in the decisive inning.
Moorhead scored in the third to break the ice, and the Wildcats came back with a run in the bottom of the inning when Lexie Loos singled and scored on a triple by Katelyn Wobken.
It stayed that way until the Wildcats’ eruption in the sixth. Wobken had the big hit in the inning, stroking a two-roun double. Chandler added a two-run single and Morgan Hoeg also had an RBI single in the big inning.
Wayne State outhit the Dragons 12-5 in the win. Loos was 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while Wobken went 2-for-3 with three RBI’s. Hoeg added two hits and Alyea had a double. Miller got the win, pitching 3 1/3 solid innings. Shelby Wobken pitched solid in relief.
Wayne State (14-17, 9-3 NSIC) will play a doubleheader Tuesday at Southwest Minnesota State, starting at 2 p.m.
