Wildcats take baseball series at Newman with 12-5 win

Wayne State jumped on Newman University early and cruised to an easy 12-5 win to take the weekend series from the Jets in action Sunday in Wichita, Kan.

The Wildcats got solo homers from Tanner Simons and Bodie Cooper in the first inning to take the early lead. Newman scored three runs in the bottom of the inning, but Wayne State followed that with four in the second to take the lead for good. Simons had a two-run triple and Chris May and Cody Jenkins had RBI singles to highlight the inning.

Wayne State extended the lead to 11-3 with five more runs in the third, thanks to a Cooper two-run double and RBI singles by Jenkins, May and Simmons. Kyle Thompson hit a solo homer in the ninth to close out the scoring.

Simons led Wayne State’s 13-hit attack with three hits, four RBI’s and three runs scored. Jenkins had three hits and two RBI and Cooper and May each added two hits. Tandon Dorn also had a double.

Aiden Breedlove got the start for the 2-1 Wildcats and gave three solid innings. Hunter Weinhoff was one of six relievers to come on later and was credited with the win, retiring all three batters in the one inning he worked. Tegan Nissen, Adam Poldberg, Spencer Johnson, Mitchell Gullikson and Joey Lenihan also saw relief action.

Wayne State is back on the road for Saturday and Sunday 12 p.m. doubleheaders March 4-5 at Missouri S&T in Rolla, Mo.
