Wildcats take care of business in first half, win big during homecoming

It didn't take long for redshirt freshman quarterback Brady McGill to find the top Wayne State College football receivers during the Sept. 27 homecoming outing against Southwest Minnesota State.

From Bob Cunningham Field, WSC won 51-6 over SMSU to improve to 3-2 (2-1 NSIC/1-0 South Division).

WSC held the Mustangs to 58 yards (133 passing/-75 rushing) but were penalized for 120 yards.

McGill started in place of Bennett Bannenbring who will be week-to-week with a lower leg injury.

WSC built a 23-0 lead in the first quarter thanks to three passing touchdowns and a safety (high snap on SMSU punt team) and added a 21 points on another passing score, defensive scoop and score and rushing touchdown in the second quarter.

The Roncalli Catholic high school standout finished 11-19 for 178 yards and four passing scores all in the first half. Senior Dilan Krause went 4-11 for 31 yards in the second half.

Touchdown receptions came from senior Colton Andrews (64 yards) on two catches for 57 yards, redshirt junior Dawson Forgy (five and 42) for 47 total yards and junior Dane Petersen (11) among two catches for 15 yards including his fifth touchdown of the season.

Sophomore Keaten Bonderseon hauled in three catches for 46 yards.

Sophomore Akeem Knox led the ground game with 11 carries for 50 yards, sophomore Jason Jones (12 attempts for 40 yards) scored from eight yards as sophomore Brennan Hayes (five rushes for 24 yards) scored from two yards.

Along with forcing three turnover on downs, the Wildcat defense produced six take-aways highlighted by a scoop and score 39-yard big man touchdown by senior Kaden Sutton.  Fellow big man and redshirt fresman Max Chapman also recovered a fumble.

Reshirt junior Kaden Johnson (three tackles), junior Luke Lambert (three tackles/one solo, one tackle for loss, one sack), graduate Alex Kowalczyk (two tackles/one solo, one tackle for loss) and redshirt freshman EJ Davis all had an interception. AK recorded his third pick of the year.

Sophomore Jes Krcil recorded a team-high 10 tackles (five solo) with three and a half tackles for loss, two sacks, one forced fumble and one pass break-up.

Other sack leaders were sophomore Jackson Boss (two tackles, two TFLs) and junior Clyde Hinton (three solo tackles, two TFLs) with a sack and forced fumble.

Both teams struggled on third downs as WSC went 3-15 and SMSU was 0-16.

The Wayne State College football team will next travel to Winona State on Saturday, October 4 at 1 p.m.
