Wildcats take two in baseball road double-dip

Wayne State’s bats were on fire as the baseball team recorded 24 runs and 28 hits in a 10-4, 14-10 sweep of William Jewell College Wednesday in Liberty, Mo.

In the opener, Wayne State cruised to a 10-0 lead on their way to the easy victory. Five players had at least two hits in the game, which included a trio of home runs.

Alex Logelin hit the first homer in the opening frame to get the Wildcats on the board. They would add three more in the fourth when Logelin doubled and scored on a throwing error, followed by an RBI single from Chris Cornish and an RBI on a fielder’s choice by Travis Baily.

In the sixth, Logelin hit his second round-tripper of the day, a two-run blast to left, and Cornish followed with a two-run homer to make it 8-0. Colin Lynam and Nick Barnett added back-to-back doubles to make it a 10-0 game as the Wildcats cruised to the easy win.

Logelin led a 12-hit attack with three hits, including two homers, three RBI and three runs scored. Cornish was 2-for-4 with a homer and three RBI and Andrew Hanson added two hits and two runs scored, including a triple. Lynam and Barnett both had two hits in the game.
Jackson Shelburne earned his first college win, going 4 2/3 innings with two runs, four hits, two strikeouts and four walks. Ryan Petersen and Josh Kilzer came on in relief.

In the nightcap, both teams lit up the scoreboard before Wayne State finished off a 16-hit effort with two runs in the ninth inning to break open a close game.

Wayne State trailed 5-4 in the third when they scored three in the inning and added two more in the fourth for a 9-5 lead that they would not relinquish. Noah Roberts had a two-run single in the third to highlight the second-game rally.

William Jewell got as close as 11-10 in the seventh, but Wayne State responded with a run in the eighth and two more in the ninth to close out the win. Lynam hit a two-run homer in the ninth to close out the scoring and finished the game going 3-for-5 with four runs scored.

Chase Douglas added three hits and two RBI and Cornish was 2-for-5 with a double and three runs scored. Hanson and Barnett both added two hits, and Josh Renken got the win in relief.

Wayne State will play five games next week in Florida on their annual spring break trip, starting with a nine-inning game vs. Notre Dame College of Ohio on Thursday, March 10 at 1:30 p.m. in Davenport, Fla.
