Wildcats unable to come back from 20+ point deficits, in search of road split Saturday

NSIC doubleheader weekend began on the road Friday night for the Wayne State College women’s and men’s basketball teams.

From the Gangelhoff Center in St. Paul, Minnesota, WSC visited Concordia-St. Paul.

The Wayne State College women lost 75-62 while the Wildcat men suffered an 85-79 loss at CSP.

In the women’s game, Concordia-St. Paul led 17-8 after the first quarter before WSC answered with a 14-12 second. At the break, CSP led 29-22. The Golden Bears won the third, 29-20 and built at-most a 22-point lead early in the fourth. WSC picked up the fourth quarter win, 20-17. Final favored Concordia-St. Paul winning 75-62. #13 CSP improved to 10-0 (4-0 NSIC) while the Wildcats fell to 4-4 (1-3 NSIC).

Wayne State College was led in scoring by senior Tate Norblade (5-8 FG/0-1 3PT/4-5 FT) with 14 points, two rebounds and one steal as senior Delaney Clark (4-6 FG/3-4 3PT/2-2 FT) added 13 points, two rebounds, one steal and one block.

Other scoring came from senior Abby Kopecky (four rebounds) with eight points; senior Carsyn Boswell (four rebounds/two assists) scored seven points; senior Maya Fitzpatrick (three rebounds/two assists/one steal/two blocks) tallied six points; junior Kylah Vandonkersgoed (one rebound/one assist/one steal/one block) had five points; four-point scoring came from junior Meg Rietz (11 rebounds/three assists) and sophomore Booklyn Kruse (four rebounds/one assist) as junior Rachel Dahlen had a point.

The Wildcats shot 21-56 (37.5%) from the field, 6-20 (30%) from the three-point line and 14-20 (70%) at the charity stripe.

Concordia St. Paul leaders were Lydia Haack (8-8 FT) with 25 points, seven rebounds and six assists; Lindsay Becher added 22 points, nine rebounds and four blocks as Mikayla Kanenwisher had 10 points.

The Golden Bears finished 27-59 (45.8%) from the floor, 6-12 (50%) from behind the arc and 15-18 (83.3%) from the foul line.

Wayne State College outrebounded Concordia-St. Paul, 39-33 including eight to two offensively which led to 15 second chance points compared to zero second chance points for CSP. Wayne State College scored six points off of six Golden Bear turnovers while Concordia-St. Paul scored 26 points off of 16 Wildcat turnovers.

Concordia-St. Paul won the battle in the paint (36-30) and fast break scoring (10-1) while WSC won the bench scoring (26-17).

During the men’s outing, the host Golden Bears led 44-30 at the break and led at-most by 23 points early in the second half. WSC won the final 20 minutes, 49-41. Final favored Concordia-St. Paul winning 85-79. CSP improved to 8-2 (3-1 NSIC) as the Wildcat men fell to 7-3 (1-3 NSIC).

Wayne State College was led in scoring by sophomore JJ Ferrin (9-18 FG/4-9 3PT) with a career-high 22 points, three rebounds and two assists; fifth-year senior Jay Saunders (6-9 FG/0-1 3PT) followed with 12 points, two rebounds, six assists, four steals and one block; fifth-year senior Sean Stokes (5-9 FG/1-4 3PT) added 11 points, five rebounds, one steal and one block; junior transfer Kai Smith (4-8 FG/2-4 3PT) tallied 10 points, two rebounds, two assists and two steals as sophomore Landon Classen (3-4 FG/2-2 3PT/2-2 FT) tacked on 10 points, two rebounds and one steal.

Other scoring came from freshman Matt Noll (three rebounds) with six points; fifth-year senior Noah Erickson (four rebounds/two assists) had five points; fifth-year senior Cody McCullough (two rebounds) sustained an injury after landing on his shoulder/back less than a minute into the game only playing 6:22 of game time and scored two points as junior Ryan Blum (one rebound) scored a point.

The Wildcats shot 32-69 (46.4%) from the field, 9-25 (36%) from the three-point line and 6-8 (75%) at the charity stripe.

Concordia St. Paul leaders were Ben Kopetzki (five made three’s) with 21 points; Antwan Kimmons recorded a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds; Marcus Skeete tallied 16 points as Cade Meyer added 13 points.

The Golden Bears finished 30-62 (48.4%) from the floor, 10-24 (41.7%) from behind the arc and 15-26 (57.7%) from the foul line.

Concordia-St. Paul outrebounded Wayne State College, 44-29 including 13 to five offensively which led to 15 second chance points compared to seven second chance points for the ‘Cats. Wayne State College scored 15 points off of 10 Golden Bear turnovers while Concordia-St. Paul scored nine points off of seven Wildcat turnovers.

Wayne State College won the battle in the paint (42-38), fast break scoring (16-7) and bench scoring (26-15).
