Wildcats walk it off, first NSIC Tournament Win since 2015

A seventh inning spark pushed #8 Wayne State College past #9 Southwest Minnesota State to advance in the 2025 NSIC Softball Tournament.

From Bowden Field in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, WSC and SMSU marked game one on Wednesday, April 30.

A one-out, two-RBI base hit gave Wayne State College a 4-3 walk-off win. The Wildcats improved to 31-23 as the Mustangs fell to 29-26.

Neither team scored in the opening inning until Southwest Minnesota State plated a single run in the top of the second.

Wayne State College followed with two runs a half of an inning later. Redshirt senior Mary Krystofiak reached safely on a fielding error allowing senior Hayley Murphy and freshman Maddie Scobee to both score.

Following a scoreless third, SMSU tied the game up with a single run in the top of the fourth and added one more run to lead 3-2 through five innings.

Moving into the seventh, WSC was down a run until Scobee stepped to the plate and posted a two-RBI single driving in both sophomore Taylor Coleman and sophomore Emliee Marth.

Final favored Wayne State College winning 4-3 while outhitting Southwest Minnesota State, 6-4. SMSU committed all five errors in the game.

Emilee Marth singled, doubled and scored; Maddie Scobee singled, drove in two runs and scored as Hayley Murphy doubled and scored.

Taylor Coleman singled and scored as senior Lauren Laudick singled.

Senior Samantha Felt (32 pitches) picked up the win in three innings of scoreless relief allowing two hits while striking out one batter.

Redshirt freshman Kennadi Borngrebe (75) started the opening four innings allowing two earned runs off two hits while striking out one batter, walking four and hitting one. Senior Grace Lucka (14) didn’t record an out allowing an earned run while walking three batters.
