A second consecutive weekday doubleheader took over the Wayne State College softball schedule.
Back inside the Dordt Dome in Sioux Center, Iowa, WSC took on Briar Cliff Wednesday evening.
Wayne State College won game one 8-0 in six innings while the Wildcats also took the second game 7-0 against Briar Cliff. WSC is now 4-0 on the season.
In the opening contest, WSC struck early with a run in the home half of the first when sophomore Taylor Coleman drove in sophomore Jordyn Klein to go up 1-0.
Defense was the name of the game during the next four and a half innings until Wayne State College, playing as the home team, took off in the bottom of the sixth scoring their final seven runs.
Redshirt freshman Marli Stones scored off an error, sophomore Jordyn Rochholz drove in senior Lauren Laudick, sophomore Emilee Marth followed by moving Rochholz and Klein across home plate, Marth later scored on an error, freshman Maddie Scobee used a sac-fly RBI scoring freshman Leah Chance as redshirt freshman Kennadi Brongrebe drove in Coleman for the seventh run of the inning.
Final favored Wayne State College winning 8-0 while also outhitting Briar Cliff, 13-5 and committing one error compared to three by the Chargers.
Coleman and Marth both singled, doubled, drove in two runs and scored; Rochholz singled, doubled, drove in a run and scored as Borngrebe singled, doubled and drove in a run. Other doubles came from Chance who also scored as well as redshirt senior Mary Krystofiak with a two-bagger.
Klein singled, drove in a run and scored twice; sophomore Lillie Timm and sophomore Maysn Bunnell both singled; Scobee accounted for a RBI as single runs came from Stones, and Laudick.
Senior Samantha Felt (pitch count na) picked up the win in three scoreless innings allowing four hits while striking out three batters. Coleman worked three scoreless innings allowing one hit while striking out seven batters and walking six.
During the second outing, scoring was more spread out for WSC who struck early again with a run in the top half of the first inning, playing as the visitor in game two, as Timm drove in Coleman.
Following scoreless second and third innings, another single run crossed the plate in the fourth thanks to a Chance RBI base knock scoring Borngrebe to go up 2-0.
WSC would score twice more in the fifth with Timm earning a RBI groundout scoring Coleman a second time as Krystofiak followed with the same scoring Marth to double the lead at 4-0.
Another scoreless frame took place in the sixth as the Wildcats then closed scoring with three runs in the top of the seventh. Krystofiak drove in Rochholz as Scobee went yard on two-run bomb allowing Payton Kincaid to score.
Final favored Wayne State College winning 7-0 while outhitting the Chargers, 13-1 and committing zero errors compared to one by Briar Cliff.
Top hitters were Borngrebe who singled twice, tripled and scored as Scobee recorded a two-run homerun.
Krystofiak singled twice and drove in two runs, Chance singled twice and drove in a run as Marth singled twice and scored. Timm singled and drove in two runs, Coleman singled and scored twice, Klein singled as single runs came from Rochholz and Kincaid.
Borngrebe (pitch count na) picked up the complete game shutout victory allowing one hit while striking out 12 batters and walking six.
The Wayne State College softball team will next travel to Topeka, Kansas for the Washburn Tournament. WSC will open against Northwest Missouri State and Missouri Western State on Friday, Feb. 21, followed by games with Pittsburg State and the host Washburn on Saturday, Feb. 22 before closing out with Emporia State on Sunday, Feb. 23.
