Memorial services for William "Bill" Young, 79, of Laurel will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 19 at United Lutheran Church in Laurel. The Rev. Tom Tuura will officiate, with burial at a later date in Laurel Cemetery. Memorial visitation will be Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the church.

 Bill died Tuesday, May 13, 2025 at Park View Haven Nursing Home in Coleridge.

Brockhaus-Howser-Fillmer Funeral Home in Norfolk is in charge of arrangements.

William A. “Bill” Young, son of Ted and Erma Ruth Young, was born June 1, 1945, in Wayne. Bill graduated from Wayne High School. On Sept. 4, 1965 he married Karen Wiebelhaus in Laurel. From this union, Bill was blessed with four children, Troy, Vicky, Brian, and Dennis. Bill later married Mina Swanson on Feb. 7, 2001 in Las Vegas, Nevada and was further blessed with four stepchildren, Jason, Justin, Jesse, and Jacob.

Bill resided in the Laurel area for his entire lifetime. He was a farmer, co-founder of Y&Y Lawn Service, and was also known as “The Oyster Man.” He was a member of United Lutheran Church in Laurel and served on the church council. He enjoyed volunteering with upkeep at the Laurel Cemetery and volunteering around Laurel.

Survivors include his wife, Mina Young of Laurel; children, Troy (Kaye) Young of Laurel, Vicky (Kent) Owen of Winside, Brian (Jenny) Young of Laurel, and Julie Hart of Laurel; stepchildren, Jason Swanson of Laurel, Justin Swanson, Jesse (Trisha) Swanson of Laurel, and Jacob (Mandi) Swanson of Laurel; grandchildren, Brooke (Logan) Hansen, Parker Young, Keegan Young, Rylynn Owen, Sidney Young, Joshua (Britney) Hart, and Justin (Keri) Hart; step-grandchildren, Maddie Swanson, Hannah (Mason) Forsberg, Kaylee Swanson, Hope Swanson, Skylar Swanson and Payton Swanson; and siblings, Erma Ruth Barker of Wayne, Janice Brockman of Norfolk, and Patrick Young of Cedar Creek, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ted and Erma Ruth Young; sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Walter Hale; sister, Dona Iddings; Dennis Hart; father-in-law, Gary Johnson; grandparents-in-law, Paul and Kaja Gade; step-father-in-law, Walter Urwiler.
