Winona State used a nine-run third inning in the opener to win 16-6 and rallied late in the second game for a 7-4 win to complete a sweep over Wayne State Tuesday in NSIC action at the Chapman Complex in Wayne.
Wayne State could not overcome Winona State’s nine-run third inning in the opener. The Wildcats took a 1-0 lead in the first on Emily Chandler’s solo homer, but the Warriors scored one in the second and nine in the third for a 10-1 lead.
Wayne State rallied with five runs in the third to cut the Warrior lead to 10-6, with Rachel Shumaker’s two-run double the big hit in the inning. Winona State responded with six runs in the fourth to end the game on the 10-run rule.
Wayne State had just three hits in the game, including Chandler’s homer, Shumaker’s double and a Katelyn Wobken double. Nataliah Hopkins took the loss, with Allison Niemeier pitching an inning of relief.]
In the nightcap, Wayne State built a 4-2 lead in the first, but the Warriors rallied with six innings of two-hit relief from McKenna Larsen to come back and complete the sweep of the Wildcats.
Monique Alyea had a solo homer and Melanie Alyea added a two-run blast to get the Wildcats going. Alyssa Schropp’s RBI single gave Wayne State a 4-2 lead, but the Warriors responded with a run in the fourth and two in the fifth to take the lead for good at 5-4. Winona State added two insurance runs in the seventh to finish the sweep.
Winona State outhit Wayne State 12-6 in the second game. Monique Alyea finished 2-for-3 with a homer, Melanie Alyea added a two-run homer while Jordyn Breitbarth doubled and Schropp and Shumaker both singled.
Riley Vanderveen suffered the pitching loss despite throwing her third complete game of the year. She allowed seven runs on 12 hits with two strikeouts and three walks.
The Wildcats (6-26, 0-8 NSIC) are home again this weekend, hosting Minot State Saturday at 1 p.m. and the University of Mary Sunday in a 12 p.m. doubleheader at the Chapman Complex.
