With a series of five straight on the road ahead of the pre-holiday break, the Winside girls and boys basketball season began on Dec. 6 with home competition.
Winside welcomed Wynot to open the year.
The Winside girls suffered a 57-36 loss while the Winside boys fell 70-33. Both teams are 0-1 to start the season.
In the girls outing, Wynot held an 8-7 lead after the first quarter and then used an 11-10 advantage in the second to lead 19-17 at half. The visiting Blue Devils then pulled away with a 17-9 third and 21-10 fourth. Final favored Wynot winning 57-36.
Winside was led in scoring by sophomore Hadleigh Schutt with 17 points, seven rebounds and six steals while sophomore Ellie Topp also scored 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds.
Freshman Bridget Marotz finished with two points and nine rebounds.
During the boys game, Wynot jumped ahead 18-7 in the first followed by a 14-3 second to go up 32-10 at the break. Wynot then outscored Winside, 23-11 in the third and 15-12 in the fourth. Final favored the visiting Blue Devils winning 70-33.
Winside leaders were freshman Jahiem Hamik with 12 points, five rebounds and three steals while sophomore Brayden Lurz followed with eight points.
Other scoring came from junior Jayden Aschoff and junior Caleb Offner (three blocks) both with five points as sophomore Tyler Paulsen tallied three points.
The Winside girls and boys basketball teams will next play five straight on the road leading up to the Summerland Holiday Tournament Dec. 27 – 28. The Wildcats will first visit Homer on Thursday, Dec. 12 and play at Bloomfield on Friday, Dec. 13.
