Winside drops road doubleheader at Homer

With some teams three to four games into their season, the Winside girls and boys basketball program took part in their second outing which began a series of five straight on the road.

From Homer, the Wildcats first visited the Knights on Thursday.

The Winside girls suffered a 64-28 loss while the Wildcat boys fell 74-43.

In the girls outing, Homer jumped ahead 20-9 in the first quarter followed by a 20-0 second to go up 40-9 at the break. The Knights also won the third quarter, 16-8 as Winside took the fourth, 11-8. Final favored the Homer girls winning 64-28 improving to 4-0 as the visiting Wildcats fell to 0-2.

Sophomore Hadleigh Schutt posted a team-high 13 points followed by freshman Bridget Marotz with nine points and sophomore Ellie Topp added six points and nine rebounds.

During the boys game, Homer held a 20-17 first quarter lead and then extended their lead thanks to a 14-12 second quarter. The Knights led 34-29 at the break. Homer then outscored Winside, 25-10 in the third and 15-4 in the fourth. Final favored Homer 74-43 to improve to 2-2 as Winside fell to 0-2.

Junior Jayden Aschoff posted a team-high 14 points and seven rebounds for Winside while junior Caleb Offner (seven rebounds/three blocks) and sophomore Brayden Lurz both scored nine points.

Other scoring came from sophomore Tyler Paulsen with six points, freshman Baker Behmer tallied three points and three steals as junior Lucas Petersen tacked on two points.
