Roy Reed Unit 252, American Legion Auxiliary of Winside celebrated the Unit's 100th anniversary on Nov. 1.
The Unit first formed at the request of the members of Roy Reed Post 252, The American Legion of Winside on June 25, 1925. At that point the request to Charter an ALA Unit began with the final signatures of the Department of Nebraska ALA President and Secretary being affixed to the official Charter on Oct. 30, 1925. There were 37 ladies who were the Charter members.
Throughout the 100 years the highest membership was at 74 and today the Unit is operating with 49 members.
LeNell Quinn of Winside, one of the new members, created Poppy corsages for the Unit officers for the celebration.
During the celebration certificates were awarded by Unit President Laura Novak.
One certificate went to the Unit's 101 year old member, Kathleen 'Katie' Bleich of Norfolk who is a 60 year member. Katie will receive her 60 pin at the 2026 Memorial Day program. Members of Katie's family were present to celebrate her 60 year membership; including, daughter Carol Swanon of Beemer; great-grandson Collin; daughter Claire Brogren and son-in-law Rod Brogren.
