Winside moves to .500 following weekend tournament in Howells

A trio of volleyball matches took over the opening weekend of competition for the Winside volleyball program.

From Howells-Dodge Consolidated in Howells, the Wildcats joined three other teams during the four-team round robin on Saturday, August 31.

Winside swept Randolph (25-16, 25-11) but suffered losses in straight sets against Hartington-Newcastle (12-25, 20-25) and the host Howells-Dodge (10-25, 12-25). The Winside Wildcats moved to 2-2 on the season over the weekend.

In the victory over Randolph, sophomore Ellie Topp led Winside with six kills, three digs and three blocks (one solo). Senior Samantha Gubbels was joined by junior Jerzi Carlson (one kill) and freshman Bridget Marotz (four kills) all with seven digs. Senior Skylar Spann finished with a team-high seven assists to go along with two digs.

Sophomore Katelyn Jaeger tallied one kill and two digs, sophomore Hadleigh Schutt also had six digs and two blocks as sophomore Raylyn Behmer tacked on two digs.

Marotz posted a team-high five service aces followed by Carlson with three aces.

During the loss against Hartington-Newcastle, Schutt (two digs/one block), Topp (two digs/one block) and Marotz (one solo block) all had three kills. Gubbels posted a team-high 11 digs while Spann led the team with six assists to go along with two digs.

Carlson finished with a kill and nine digs as Jaeger had three digs.

Service aces came from Marotz and Carlson with one each.

From the loss with Howells-Dodge, Jaeger (team-high seven digs), Marotz (one solo block/one dig) and Schutt (one dig) all had two kills. Spann led the team in assists with three.

Topp finished with a kill, Gubbels tallied six digs, Carlson had six digs as Behmer tacked on two digs.

Schutt posted a team-high five service aces while Carlson had an ace.
