Winside shutout on road to open season

In preparation for their home opener in early September, the Winside football team started 2025 at Humphrey.

On August 29, the Wildcats visited Archangels Catholic during an eight-man showdown.

The host Defenders jumped ahead early to win 54-0 as Winside fell to 0-1.

Archangels Catholic scored 32 points in the opening quarter followed by eight points in the second to lead 40-0 at half. The Defenders closed scoring with 14 points in the fourth quarter.

Winside was led by senior quarterback Jayden Aschoff going 6-10 for 47 yards with one interception and one fumble.

Junior Carter Krause was the top runner carrying the ball 12 times for 35 yards.

Both senior Matthew Gubbels (33 yards) and Krause (14 yards) hauled in three receptions.

Krause posted 93 total yards on the day to go along with his rushing and receiving he added 42 kickoff return yards and two yards on punt return.

Defensively for the Wildcats, Gubbels recorded a team-high 10 tackles (six solo) as senior Aden Sellin tallied nine tackles (eight solo) with one tackle for loss. Sellin also posted a sack for a loss of three yards.

Winside will next host Madison on Friday, September 5 at 7 p.m.
