The Winside girls got their first win of the season and the Winside boys had to wait for the final buzzer before coming away with a win as the Wildcat teams swept Allen on Veterans’ Night Tuesday at Winside High School.

In the girls game, the Wildcats won the matchup of winless teams as a late fourth-quarter rally by the Lady Eagles came up short in a 45-40 outcome.

Winside held their first halftime lead of the season with a 24-21 advantage and led by as many as 11 points midway through the final period before Allen tried to battle their way back at the free throw line. The Lady Eagles were 9-of-17 from the charity strip in the final period, but it wasn’t enough as the hosts hung on for the win.

Alyssa Brogren led a balanced Winside attack with 10 points, Callie Finn added nine and Alex Bargstadt and Morgan Remm each had eight. Sarah Wolfe put in five points, Andi Bargstadt had three and Kellie Kampa scored two.

For the Lady Eagles, Madisen Schneiders had a game-high 20 points, Bri Hingst added eight, Haley Stapelton had five, Ally Twohig scored three and Katie Bathke and Bethany Kneifl each added two.

In the boys game, the two teams played a close contest from start to finish, but Winside had to make a last-second defensive stand to hang on for a 45-44 win over the Eagles.

Allen led 10-9 early in the game thanks to a pair of 3-pointers by Tayler Kumm, but Winside battled back and took a 22-18 lead into the locker room.

The game stayed close until the end. Allen led 44-43 when Brandon Watters drove the lane and scored with seven seconds left to give Winside the lead. Allen called time out with 3.3 seconds left and had a shot to potentially win the game, but it was blocked by Watters and Winside held on for the win to improve to 8-10, while Allen fell to 4-13.

Dylan Brogren paced the winners with 11 points and JaShaun Vyborny added 10. Jason Wagner scored eight points, Colton Jensen and Caleb Kampa each had seven and Watters scored two.

Kumm led all scorers with 21 points for the Eagles and Garrett Brentlinger added eight. Kyle Smith and Brogan Jones each had five, Chase Johnson scored three and Josh Grone put in two.

In between the boys and girls games, Winside High School honored veterans from both communities with a short program. After the program, players and coaches from both teams shook hands with the veterans from Winside and Allen and thanked the hometown heroes for their service to America.

Winside’s teams play at Osmond on Thursday, while the Allen boys and girls host Bloomfield.
