Winside volleyball battles for Lewis & Clark Conference Finals

After earning a bye into tourney play, the Winside volleyball team opened their Lewis and Clark Conference volleyball tournament on Monday.

From Winnebago, #4 Winside battled #5 Creighton in the first of two matches played for the Wildcats.

Winside first won a three-set match over Creighton (16-25, 26-24, 25-13) before falling in five sets with #1 Wynot in the winner’s bracket (19-25, 21-25, 25-20, 25-17, 11-15).

Winside is now 11-11 on the season.

From the Winside victory over Creighton, freshman Bridget Marotz recorded a double-double with 17 kills and 15 digs to go along with two blocks (one solo) while sophomore Hadleigh Schutt posted a double-double with 19 assists and 11 digs along with three kills and two blocks. Junior Jerzi Carlson led Winside in digs with 20 and had one kill. Senior Samantha Gubbels totaled 19 digs and one kill.

Sophomore Ellie Topp followed with six kills and three digs as sophomore Katelyn Jaeger added two kills, seven digs and one block. Other digs came from senior Skylar Spann (six) and sophomore Adrianna Miller (two).

Schutt finished with three service aces, Spann added two aces as Carlson had an ace.

During the Winside loss with Wynot, second double-doubles were posted from Marotz (three blocks, one solo) with 28 kills and 21 digs as Schutt (seven kills/one block) recorded 29 assists and 20 digs.  Double figure dig leaders were Carlson (16) who tallied one kill and one block, Gubbels (15) and Jaeger (12) who had two kills and two blocks.

Topp followed added six kills, three digs and one block as other digs came from sophomore Raylyn Behmer (five) and Spann (three).

Carlson finished with five service aces, Marotz and Schutt both tacked on four aces as Topp had an ace.

In the loser’s bracket from Walthill, #3 Tri County Northeast won in three sets against #6 Bloomfield (21-25, 25-20, 25-19).

The winner’s bracket saw Homer sweep Tri County NE (25-15, 25-12, 25-19).
