Working in Wayne: Municipal Power Plant

Posted

The Wayne Municipal Power Plant has helped power the community for more than 125 years. The City of Wayne’s power plant has provided reliable electricity since its beginnings in 1897.

The plant evolved from a small, evening lighting system into a full scale facility capable of generating enough electricity to power the entire community. Over the years the plant transitioned from coal-fired steam generators to diesel powered equipment, (some of which are still in service today) keeping pace with changing technology and the city’s growing energy needs.

The current facility houses eight diesel generators, ranging in age from 1947 to 1976, capable of producing at full load/capacity approximately 19 megawatts (MW) of electricity.

Today, Wayne purchases most of its electricity through regional providers, but the power plant remains a valuable backup resource. It will allow the City, under its new contract starting in 2027, to use it a capacity to hopefully save money going forward.
