Workings in Wayne

Posted

The City of Wayne Parks and Recreation Department maintains and develops all the parks in the City as well as coordinates all recreational activities in the community; it also operates the Wayne Community Activity Center (CAC) and the Aquatic Center.

Parks

Prairie Park is coming along great! The City has 17 camping pads that have been used a lot since it opened, with the showers being a big hit with the campers and the ball players. The department planted over 400 trees in the park last fall/this spring. We will have about 30 some trees to replace that didn’t make it. The lake and fountains look great along with the walking trail around the lake.

Our biggest issue right now is the geese leaving a mess on and around the trail. We are working on this problem along with Nebraska Game and Parks. Let friends and family know to not feed the geese, as this will only make our problem worse.

The new Parks and Recreation building is almost complete from the contractors (Otte) side. City employees will work on building/finishing the “office” portion (2 offices, breakroom, 2 bathrooms, storage/mechanical space) this fall/winter. The City will be awarding the outside concrete work to a contractor the first week of August.

The City has started a new Parks and Recreation Board. This Board will provide input on what the public would like to see improved at the parks, pool, CAC, and recreational programs to City staff and Council. This group will help provide for the future for Parks and Recreation.

Recreation

Fall recreational sign-ups are happening now for K-6th grade football, third-sixth grade volleyball, and third - sixth grade cheer. Parents/guardians can register online at cac.cityofwayne.org. We are also having in-person sign-ups for those on Thursday (July 31) from 4-6 p.m. at the CAC. The CAC is looking for volunteer coaches for both football and volleyball. Adult co-ed softball league is currently playing on Monday nights down at the complex. *

***Please note that the gym and walking track will be closed through Friday, Aug 1 while they re-coat the basketball courts and Community Room floor. The roof has been repaired, so no more buckets around the gym.

The Aquatic Center will close Sunday, Aug. 10 for the year. This year the City had 452 memberships for the pool between Family, Family +1, Individual and Senior Citizen Memberships. Terran Sievers, Pool Manager, does an incredible job every year with our pool and its staff.
