City Council meetings
Regular Wayne City Council meetings are at 5:30 p.m. on the first and third Mondays of each month in City Hall at 513 Main Street. Mondays are made for professional football and professional governance! See the latter live and the former on TV, all in the same night!
Sidewalk Replacement
Incentive
The City Council revised the sidewalk improvement cost share policy to include cross slope issues that don’t comply with ADA as a reimbursable cost to a property owner using the City incentive.
If you have a sidewalk that needs to be replaced for certain reasons, reach out the City and discuss a cost share with us! At $5 a square foot, the cost share can certainly make it worth replacing those sidewalk squares. Also, did you know that the City can help with 50% of removing a tree that is in the right of way when it is compromising sidewalk integrity?
The Council also recently changed that it will be the deciding body, not staff, if a private tree needs to be removed for pedestrian safety and sidewalk protection. This would occur if a larger tree growing close to the sidewalk away from the street was causing problems.
If you want more details about the program and specifics on the cost sharing, contact City Hall or find Resolution 2026-70 for all the details.
Equipment Purchases
With a new fiscal year comes the purchasing of equipment that has been on hold until budget approval happens.
At its last meeting the Council approved the purchase of two different pieces of equipment. The Electric Department purchased a “new to them” bucket truck that will replace a 1986 truck. This truck has been a demonstration truck that the City has had for a couple months. It has 20,000 miles and over 900 hours on it. The City received about a 15% discount since it was slightly used.
The other larger purchase made was a used 2016 “water wagon” that will replace a 1975 unit. After 51 years this was a welcome upgrade. This water wagon will be used to haul water, flush sewers, clean/flush streets around town and wet down park roads when dust becomes an issue.
Early Voting
Three-term Chicago Mayor, William Hale Thompson, (serving nonconsecutive terms from 1915 to 1923 and from 1927 to 1931) was known for political corruption in the Chicago area and the saying “vote early …and vote often!” While the “often” part is obviously illegal, the early part is most definitely legal. Early voting has become much more regular ever since the 2020 election (COVID).
If you are interested in the early voting process, visit your friendly Wayne County Clerk’s office. This visit can be in person, at the courthouse or online.
If you go online you can find much more information at www.waynecountyne.gov. On this page find the County office of the Election Commissioner (Clerk) to find all your election/voting needs, including the early voting option. But remember, if you vote early…only vote once!
