Lately in the news it seems “Data Centers” have been a hot topic both locally and nationally. What are they, why do they want to come to Nebraska, and what are the issues surrounding them?
Data centers are most often regarded as large centralized facilities, or even campuses, that house thousands of networked computers, servers and data storage equipment. When you hear the term “cloud computing” or “the cloud”, they are referencing data centers. Data centers serve as the foundational structure of the Internet, providing the resources for all of the websites, apps, and storage that we use each and every day.
Companies like Amazon, Google, Microsoft and Meta (Facebook) rely on numerous data centers around the globe to provide their services to end users. However, it’s not just the mega corporations that utilize these platforms as small companies, government entities and even individual users rely on these same data centers to house, process and serve up their data on a daily basis. Several of the services the City of Wayne relies on, on a day-to-day basis, are hosted in data centers scattered across the U.S.
So, why are companies looking to build data centers in Nebraska?
Addition: the City of Wayne states "there are no data center plans currently".
