WSC athletics recap: football, volleyball, women's soccer, women's golf

Offense, defense and special teams all put points on the board with a fireworks celebration following the Wayne State College football Family Day game.

From Bob Cunningham Field on the campus of Wayne State College on Sept. 19, WSC used a season-high in scoring during a 44-7 victory.

WSC is now 3-1 (2-1 NSIC).

Wayne native Alex Phelps finished with four receptions for 89 yards and one score.

Brayden Chaney (three solo tackles) and Clyde Hinton (one tackle)) recorded a 71-yard pick six and 33-yard pick six respectively.

Dawson Forgy closed the game with 92 yards on 16 carries and two scores.

Brady McGill  went 11-of-20 for 215 yards with two touchdowns as Keaten Bonderson hauled in a 30-yard score. 

Kaden Johnson (four solo) posted a team-high nine tackles to go along with a half tackle for loss and half sack followed by Luke Lambert (two solo) with eight tackles. He also had one and a half tackles for loss and a half sack.

 

 

A home sweep and reverse sweep were two featured matches for #2 Wayne State College in a top-five showdown to defend Rice Arena during Family Weekend.

First on Sept. 18, the Wildcats secured their ninth sweep of the season in a match over Winona State (25-21, 25-23, 25-15).

WSC then posted a come-from-behind victory against #5 Concordia-St. Paul the following afternoon (25-27, 20-25, 25-22, 25-21, 15-12).

The Wildcats have now won six straight to improve to 12-1 (4-0 NSIC).

A Wildcat double-double in the five-set match came from Channatee Robles with 22 kills and 23 digs. She was named NSIC Offensive Player of the Week by the NSIC.

Robles tallied 31 kills and 30 digs in two matches along with a pair of aces.

Molly Romano totaled 80 assists, 13 digs and two aces while Anna Borner added 30 digs and two aces.

 

A second career 20-20 double-double by Channatee Robles landed her on the player of the week podium.

According to a release from Wayne State Athletics, senior outside hitter Channatee Robles was named as the Northern Sun Conference Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week following her performances in NSIC home wins over the weekend against Winona State and #5 Concordia-St. Paul.

She produced 22 kills and a career-high 23 digs in a 3-2 win and had nine kills, seven digs and one service ace in Friday’s sweep vs. Winona State.

 

 

After playing four of five on their home pitch, the Wayne State College women's soccer team began their first of back-to-back road weekends.

First from Bemidji, MN on Sept. 18, WSC suffered a 1-0 loss and two days later in Duluth, MN dropped a second 1-0 defeat against UMD.

The Wildcats are now 2-5 (1-3 NSIC).

Morgan Mancuso led WSC with both of her shots on goal against Bemidji State.

Alexa Hofstetter allowed one goal and tallied six saves during 90 minutes in goal.

During the loss at Minnesota Duluth, Olivia Thompson led the 'Cats with all three shots on goal.

Hofstetter allowed the one goal but added 14 saves in 90 minutes in goal.

 

For a second straight week, the Wayne State College women's golf team was in action.

From Andover, KS, the Wildcats first set a new school record score of 288 (four-over PAR) in the first round of the MIAA Preview on Sept. 21. The following day, the 'Cats then posted a 291 to finish runner-up overall with a 579.

Molly Goc led Wayne State College finishing in a tie for sixth  with a one-over 143 which, per WSC athletics, matched the school record set by Jazmine Taylor in 2022 at Victory Links Golf Club in Blaine, Minnesota. 

The Columbus native set a new individual scoring record with a two-under 69 on day one (previous record was held by three different players at one-under 71). She followed with a 74 the next day.

Erica Lee took ninth with a 144 (74/70) which was the third-lowest score in program history followed by Saleah Vivanh-Vong in a tie for 10th with a 145 (72/73).
