WSC athletics recap: football, volleyball, women's soccer, women's/men's cross country

With 36 seconds remaining in regulation, Dawson Forgy put the Wayne State College football team ahead for good with another late game heroics.

From Herb Parker Stadium in Minot, ND, the Wildcats put up 21 points in the fourth quarter to win 35-28 at Minot State on Sept. 3.

WSC, now 2-0 (1-0 NSIC), jumped into to the D2Football.com Top 25 Media Poll at #24.

Wayne native Alex Phelps also hauled in a 14-yard receiving touchdown (two catches for 20 yards) from Brady McGill.

 

With NSIC play on the horizon, #2 Wayne State College posted a 3-1 record against high caliber opponents during the 'invite-only' Colorado Premier Challenge.

From Denver, CO, the second-ranked Wildcats first swept then #25 Central Missouri (25-20, 25-22, 25-14) on Sept. 4 followed by a 3-0 victory over Regis (CO) (25-13, 25-21, 25-16) to place them in the Gold bracket.

Wayne State College suffered their lone loss of the season in straight sets the following day against then #5 Ferris State (MI) (21-25, 18-25, 23-25) before closing with a third place finish thanks to a four-set victory over Lewis (IL) (16-25, 25-9, 25-21, 25-14).

WSC is now 7-1 on the season and remained #2 in the latest AVCA/TARAFLEX Top 25 Coaches Poll receiving (1,073 points/three first-place votes).

Weekend double-doubles came from Molly Romano (31 assists/15 digs) against Regis as well as Channatee Robles (17 kills/11 digs) against Lewis.

Robles was the top attacker for the final three matches finishing with 53 total kills to go along with 33 digs.

Home volleyball at Rice Arena is scheduled for Sept. 14 at 6 p.m. in non-conference play against Briar Cliff.

 

Wayne State College junior setter Molly Romano was announced as the Northern Sun Conference Volleyball Setter of the Week following her play over the weekend at the Colorado Premier Challenge in Denver.

A graduate of Council Bluffs Abraham High School, Romano averaged 10.46 assists and 2.54 digs per set in helping the Wildcats go 3-1 and capture third place in the Gold Bracket while being one of 12 players voted by coaches to the Colorado Premier Challenge All-Tournament Team. 

Romano joined Channatee Robles on All-Tournament Team.Robles averaged 4.08 kills and hit .319 in the four matches while also accounting for 2.54 digs per set. 

 

A goal in the final minutes for Wayne State College wasn't enough against in-state rival Nebraska-Kearney after both teams battled delays due to excessive heat and a location change to their Sept. 4 match.

From St. Joseph, MO, the Wildcats began mid-week action on Sept. 2 with a 2-0 loss at Missouri Western before dropping a 3-1 home decision with UNK.

The match with UNK was delayed three times due to excessive heat and was then moved from the WSC Soccer Complex to Memorial Stadium at Cunningham Field due to darkness an hour ahead of their match.

The lone Wildcat goal was credited to Briella Thompsen off the assist of Olivia Thompson in the 89th minute.

 

Race number one for the Wayne State College women's and men's cross country program was under the lights in Sioux Falls, SD.

From Yankton Trails Park on Sept. 4, the WSC women finished 17th (28 teams) while the Wildcat men took 14th (33 teams). Both teams scored 490 points during the Augustana Twilight.

In the women's division, Addison Bertrand was the top WSC finisher coming in 76th overall from a field of 350 runners with a time of 19:20.8 on the 5,000-meter course.

Wayne's Lilyan Hurner finished 253rd (21:58.0) in her first collegiate race.

During men's action, Lucas Frazier finished 39th overall out of 478 runners to lead Wayne State on the 5,000-meter course in a time of 15:37.9 followed by William Keller who was 82nd overall in 16:07.3.

 

Wayne State College track and field head coach Marlon Brink has announced that the 14th Annual WSC Youth Track Meet will be held September 26

From the WSC Wildcat Dome, youth between ages 5-14 can compete on the Dr. Ron Holt Track. 

The morning will open with registration and t-shirt pick-up from 9 until 9:20 am.

Registration fee is $20 if registered by September 20, and $25 after September 20 and including the day of the meet registration.
