WSC concludes Washburn softball tournament with 3-3 finish

A fifth and sixth game in three days closed out the Wayne State College softball opening tournament trip on Tuesday.

From Topeka, Kansas, WSC took on Missouri Western State and the host Washburn early in the day.

Wayne State College suffered a 9-3 loss to Missouri Western State followed by a 6-2 victory over the Ichabods. WSC improved to 7-3 after going 3-3 during the Washburn Tournament.

In the loss to Missouri Western State, Wayne State College would get on the board first with a run in the home half of the first inning. A bases loaded hit by pitch would score freshman Leach Chance

Following back-to-back scoreless innings, Missouri Western State went off for an eight-run top of the fourth.

The Wildcats answered back with single run in the home half of the fourth off a sacrifice fly from freshman Maddie Scobee scoring sophomore Jordyn Rochholz.

After two more scoreless innings, both teams would score a run in the seventh. The Wildcat run came from Chance on a throw.

Final favored Missouri Western State winning 9-3 and outhitting WSC, 6-5 while committing one error compared to none by the Wildcats.

Rochholz finished with a single, RBI and run scored as redshirt freshman Kennadi Borngrebe double. Sophomore Jordyn Klein, sophomore Taylor Coleman and redshirt senior Mary Krystofiak all singled, Scobee accounted for a RBI as Chance scored twice.

Borngrebe (38 pitches) suffered the loss in a third of an inning allowing five earned runs off three hits while walking and hitting two batters each.

Senior Samantha Felt (63)  started and worked three and a third innings allowing three earned runs off two hits while striking out and walking two batters each. Senior Grace Lucka (84) pitched three and a third innings allowing an earned run off one hit while striking out and walking four batters each.

From the sixth game in three days, both teams were scoreless the opening two and a half innings until Washburn plated a run in the bottom of the third.

Wayne State College fired right back with a four-run top of the fourth to go up 4-1. Sophomore Lillie TImm drove in Coleman and Chance followed by Krystofiak who added two more RBI scoring sophomore Masyn Bunnell and Borngrebe.

WSC then followed with single runs in the top of the fifth and top of the sixth off a RBI base hit from Timm scoring Chance followed by a solo homerun from senior Hayley Murphy.

Washburn scored one more run in the home half of the sixth.

Final favored Wayne State College winning 6-2 and outhitting Washburn, 7-5 while committing zero errors compared to two by the Ichabods.

Timm singled twice and drove in three runs; Chance doubled and scored twice as Murphy posted a solo homerun. Krystofiak singled and drove in two runs, Coleman singled and scored; sophomore Emilee Marth singled as Borngrebe and Bunnell both scored.

Borngrebe (127) picked up the complete game victory in seven innings allowing two earned runs off five hits while striking out two batters and walking seven.

The Wayne State College softball team will next travel to Liberty, Missouri for a four-game series at William Jewell College on Saturday, March 1 at 1/3 p.m. and Sunday, March 2 at 1/3 p.m.
