Second quarter Wildcat turnovers costly

Despite another solid outing by redshirt junior Dawson Forgy on the ground, three straight interceptions early in the game were the deciding factor for Wayne State College.

From Winona, MN, Wayne State College was unable to score on the final drive falling 21-14.

Both teams are now 3-3 overall (3-2 NSIC/1-1 South Division).

Neither team scored in the first quarter until Winona State University turned three straight interceptions into a 14-0 halftime lead. 

Wayne State College first scored with 5:03 left in the third quarter thanks to a two-yard run by Forgy.

Winona State answered early in the fourth before Forgy added a one-yard score with 2:34 remaining in the game.

Forgy finished with 188 yards on 29 carries and two scores along with two catches for seven yards.

Redshirt freshman Brady McGill went 19-32 for 145 yards and three interceptions. He was sacked four times.

Sophomore Brennan Hayes added 12 rushes for 54 yards.

Junior Dane Petersen hauled in five passes for 54 yards as senior Colton Andrews tallied five grabs for 32 yards.

Sophomore Tanner Houck added two catches for 22 yards, Wayne native sophomore Alex Phelps recorded a 16-yard reception and junior Elijah Hudson tacked on an eight-yard reception.

Sophomore Jes Krcil posted a team-high six tackles (one solo) with a tackle for loss as redshirt freshman Kahmel Johnson (three solo, four pass break-ups) and junior Luke Lambert (four solo), one tackle for loss, half sack) both had five tackles.

Junior Carter Sitzman (three tackles, two solo) recorded two and a half tackles for loss and a sack and a half while junior James Frank (four tackles, two solo) totaled a tackle and a half for loss.

Wayne State College ran 82 plays for 381 yards (145 passing, 236 rushing) compared to Winona State's 59 plays for 178 yards (132 passing, 46 rushing).

The Wildcats are the second-most penalized team in the NSIC (69.8 yards per game on 44 penalties) and were called for seven penalties totaling 62 yards this past weekend.

Junior placekicker Boston Hensley missed two field goals (27-yards and 35-yards).

Wayne State College will next host Bemidji State University (1-5/1-4 NSIC/1-1 North) on Saturday, Oct. 11 at 1 p.m. ahead of their bye week on Oct. 18.
