WSC football wraps up spring drills, remain motived moving into summer workouts

A preview of what’s to come Fall of 2025 was put on display with the Wayne State College football offense battling their defense over the weekend.

According to a release from Wayne State Athletics, the Saturday morning spring football drills concluded for 2025 at Bob Cunningham Field in Wayne.

The Wildcat defense was spotted a 23-0 lead to start the game followed by the Wayne State offense utilizing big plays to rally for a 31-30 win.

Redshirt freshman quarterback Bennett Dannenbring fired a 60-yard scoring strike to Winona State University senior transfer wide receiver Ty Johnson for one score while Dannenbring scampered 70 yards on a scoring run for another big play touchdown.

Other TD’s for the ‘Cats came from sophomore Brennan Hayes on a three-yard TD rush and a one-yard plunge from sophomore Caden Roethler. Junior placekicker Boston Hensley rounded out the scoring with a 36-yard field goal.

Dannenbring led Wildcat rushers with four carries for 58 yards thanks to his 70-yard TD run. Sophomore tailback  Akeem Knox followed with 34 yards on six rushes while Hayes ended with 22 yards on eight carries.

Throwing the ball, freshman Brady McGill was 10 of 13 for 66 yards. Dannenbring completed 5 of 10 throws for 99 yards while senior Dilan Krause was 2 of 3 for 39 yards.

Top receivers were Ty Johnson with three catches for 81 yards that included a 70-yard score. Redshirt freshman Keaten Bondersen followed with six grabs for 61 yards and senior Colton Andrews had two receptions for 16 yards.

Defensively, linebackers redshirt junior Kaden Johnson and sophomore Dayne Mauk each recorded five tackles. Redshirt freshman Jackson Bos, senior Isaac Robinson, sophomore Trent Patton and redshirt freshman Jes Krcil each recorded sacks.

The Wayne State College football team is scheduled to open the 2025 football season on Thursday, August 28 hosting Nebraska-Kearney in a 6 p.m. game at Cunningham Field in Wayne.
